A Girl's True Story with Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #202!

First I want to wish my readers and friends a very Merry Christmas! I hope everyone has a safe and blessed holiday weekend. I chose the photo above with the red flowers and green stems, because these are traditional Christmas colors. I also thought it goes with the YouTube video below about "A Blooming Girl". The flowers are growing in a hanging basket on my balcony.

Today's post is about a girl's true story - and I happen to have two! One is a YouTube video by Youth With A Mission (YWAM) about a girl named Henrietta who is growing up in South Africa and the other is a picture book about a girl named Bessie who was the first African American woman to receive a pilot's license.

Addiction Recovery Farm and Weekend #Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #183!

A quick greeting and warm wishes to my regular visitors of my weekend blog hop. You might have noticed that I wasn't on top of things and that, in fact, I was dragging my feet last month! Well, besides being terribly distracted today, I do feel better and ready to tackle this month full speed ahead. Last month I didn't even post a book review, but this month I have 5 book posts lined up and my first one went live yesterday. Often included is a PayPal cash or Amazon gift card giveaway, so don't miss out!

Some of you will have read about RAEL, the addiction recovery farm, where my husband visits twice a week as a Christian volunteer. He goes to encourage the guys and give Bible training.

Last Saturday we participated in an event that they were running, a 48-hour loom-athon, to knit scarves and beanies for the needy while raising addiction awareness and removing the stigma associated with addicts. It's wintertime in South Africa, in case you were wondering why the scarves and beanies.

If you would like to read more about RAEL, then check out my more in-depth post from last year, Sober Living.

21st Anniversary with Weekend #Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #182!

I'm sorry that I missed posting my weekend linky party last Friday. I'm also behind on answering comments, but I have been reading them and really appreciate them.

We had a full house last weekend with my son visiting from university and my mother-in-law also staying over. Our kids are all back at school and university. The break they had was their winter break and now they have begun term 3.

In winter, we get some sunny days and the other days are cold and rainy. It's nice living in a Mediterranean climate here in South Africa in the Western Cape! I don't miss winter in the States or Germany.

My big announcement is that Hubby (Robbie) and I are celebrating our 21st anniversary today!  We have made it this far, we have gotten past the worst (the first few years had some rocky moments), and I'm looking forward to the next 21+ years. We have been involved in Christian ministry for most of that time. In fact, we met on the mission field.

This past year, Robbie has been volunteering twice a week in a pastoral capacity at a Christian drug rehab farm just outside of town. I visited for my first time on Sunday and I brought the Sunday message, which was based on Luke 16:10, "Whoever can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with big things. Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things too" (Easy-to-Read Version).

There was such a great atmosphere among the guys and afterwards they thanked me for the message, but I don't know who had more fun, me or them? Anthony Hall, the guy who runs the place, used to be an alcoholic and drug addict too. He lost his job, his family, everything. Now he and his wife, Karin, help others at R.A.E.L (Recovering Addicts Empowering Lives), which they founded in 2007.

Pets from the Pound with #Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #158!

Welcome to the first Make My Saturday Sweet of 2016! On Tuesday, I posted photos of Pets at the Beach with my in-laws' cats included. They adopted their two kitties from an animal shelter in December 2003. Today's post is for all the dogs and cats sitting in pounds around the world waiting to find their forever-homes. Over the years, we have adopted pets from the pound too.

Our son has been volunteering during his holiday at the local animal shelter. (He's in the photo below.) They had an outreach earlier this week where they educated pet owners, dipped 47 dogs, de-wormed 51 dogs and gave out 50 kg of dog food. "The best things in life are rescued," was written on the back of their T-shirts.

Wordless Wednesday - 3

How I Spent My 4th of July

Standing in a line outside the South African Revenue Service
Reading in the sound room at the Blind Institute, South Africa
It was just a normal day here in South Africa. I only remembered it was my 4th of July once I read the time and date inside the SARS building. Robbie (my hubby) braved the cold wind and slight drizzle with me while we waited outside in the cold for an hour. We got there 20 minutes before 8 am to get a good spot in the line and they only began letting people through the door at 8:15 am. I guess that's Africa for you. The tax man was a friendly lady and she processed my paperwork quickly. That was a huge a relief.

Shortly after, I went to the Blind Institute where I volunteer for about 2 hours once a week by reading in a sound room, which gets recorded and distributed to the visually impaired. It can be anything from novels to Christian religious to text books and exam papers.

For dinner, my hubby surprised me with a 4th of July treat for his American wife. He picked up American-style chocolate chip cookies at the store and served it with vanilla ice-cream.

P.S. My Wordless Wednesday has 195 words not including the captions or this message. I guess it's not that wordless!
