It's All in the Mind with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #141!

My blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.

Once a week, I have the pleasure of choosing videos for the level 5 English class at YWAM (Youth With A Mission) as I have them for one hour a week for "Listening." The topic this week was, "It's all in the mind."

One of the videos that I chose was from Jacob Barnett on TEDxTeen titled, "Forget what you know," with the subtitle, "The wisdom of not knowing."

Here are a few points that I got from watching this video:

* Traditional learning does not help us to think for ourselves.

* We learn best when we learn in our own unique way, not accepting everything that is already out there - the straight facts that get told to us.

* We need to stop learning and start thinking in our own unique perspective, which leads to creating.

Check out this fun video by an autistic boy who looks at numbers and problems in his own unique way and be inspired to see things differently!

By the way, the comments below the video have a lot of derogatory statements about how he moves and laughs, but everyone must remember that he is not a typical boy, but an autistic boy who has overcome great obstacles to be speaking in front of an audience. Hasn't everyone seen "Rain Man" the movie?

Gender Equality with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #140!

My blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.
Click on the images to view them larger.

I'm one of the listening and pronunciation teachers for several classes at the English Language School in YWAM this term. This week's theme in the Level 5 English Language class was on "Battle of the Sexes." The class is made up of a few men and women from Brazil, Angola and Madagascar. I only see them for one hour a week for their listening class.

Gender equality is a topic close to our hearts. For example, my husband is a big advocate for women in ministry. He spends countless hours on forums and writes blog posts on the topic on Real Church Life.

For my listening class, I chose two excellent YouTube videos. One is about the roles of American women during World War II, "Wartime Rosies," and the other is a speech by Emma Watson at the UN. I don't necessarily condone everything that is said on these two videos, but the message is clear in both of them and that is what I want to leave you with.

Living in South Africa with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #139!

My blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.

As an American living in South Africa, I've had to adjust to a new lifestyle. In South Africa, most people don't have central heating or cooling in their homes. Usually laundry machines are only hooked up to cold water taps and laundry is hung outside to dry.

Having a gardener and a maid is common among middle and upper class families, since it's affordable and totally worth it. We have a guy who comes twice a month to work in the garden and a lady that comes once a week for half a day to clean the house. They are a great help!

Electricity is a luxury and our power gets cut occasionally as the power company, Eskom, does not have enough to power the whole country. It's called, "load shedding." (I shared this information and the photo below on Wednesday.)

Amanda is learning to play field hockey and netball at school and has participated in mini matches against other schools.

Living in a foreign country always has its ups and downs. When I began 1camera1mom, I fell in love again with the region we live in. There's so much beauty around me and interesting things to do. I miss family and I miss conveniences that I don't have here, but my kids are thriving and things are pretty good.

And so, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I just thought to throw that in, because last week's post, "My Favorite Color Is...," was about color and color idioms.

Let me know where you're from and leave me a link so that I can visit your latest blog post! Have a great weekend!
