The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,
by C.S. Lewis

This hardcover version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was abridged by Amanda Benjamin and illustrated by Christian Birmingham. The illustrations are detailed, the faces are full of expression, and every picture has atmosphere. The pages are not numbered, but there are 46 pages counting from where the story begins. This book is suitable for ages 4 and up, with the older children getting more out of it. Amanda was 5 years old at the time that we did this review.

The opening scene has the four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy exploring the large country house of a kind old Professor. In this first picture you can see how we set the scene using a plastic doll house and the characters from the Disney movie with toys from McDonalds. The toys we got several years ago, but we still have them and they are really great.

Lucy is the first one to stumble upon the magical world of Narnia after entering the wardrobe in the spare room. She is invited to tea with Mr. Tumnus, a faun, whom she met by chance or by providence. We had tea and cookies at this scene. I had to explain to Amanda that when the English have tea, they have a meal with it. I think she's been somewhat Americanized by me and thought that it was incorrect to say that they were having tea when so much food was included. Hahaha!

I'm not going to tell you the whole story, as you need to read the book or at least watch the Disney movie. I'll only share snip-its to explain the scenes.

A little bit later, her brother Edmund ends up in Narnia after following Lucy through the wardrobe on her second visit. Edmund has a naughty streak and this gets him into trouble. He ends up meeting the White Witch, who gives him his favorite treat, Turkish Delight. He doesn't realize that it's enchanted and eats all of it up. Of course, we had to have some Turkish Delight ourselves to taste what he was enjoying, but ours was luckily not enchanted. And, if I might add, they were delicious!

By the way, I have been to Turkey and to Cyprus. The people in Cyprus are very proud of their Cyprus Delight, which is basically the same thing and very yummy, I might add. Amanda hasn't had these experiences, so it's fun introducing her to new things.

On Lucy's third visit to Narnia, all four of the siblings end up going together. The oldest two who hadn't been before realize for the first time that Lucy was telling the truth. They borrow fur coats from the wardrobe, as it is winter in Narnia.

At this point, I allowed Amanda to put on my fur coat, which was given to me when I was a teenager by my great aunt. She was an eccentric woman who enjoyed her role as aunt and great aunt as she never had children of her own. Now, I never asked to own a fur coat and I'm not sure what to do with mine, but I sometimes wonder what type of animal was used and if they were farmed, etc. We do care about animal rights at our home. We also eat meat, but we try to buy free range eggs and free range meat when we can.
The scene opposite is an exciting part of the story, especially when it's played out in the movie, where the children meet Father Christmas. Here we have the picture from the movie in front of the book's illustration. This picture also came with the Narnia toys from McDonalds years ago when the movie was showing in theaters/cinemas.

Father Christmas comes with news that Aslan is on the move and gives the children unusual gifts with special purposes. I put Aslan, the lion, in front, as he is a key part of the story. C.S. Lewis was a Christian author and the story of Aslan, especially in this book, has many similarities to Jesus and His death and resurrection. If you are a Christian or not, you will still enjoy The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a great piece of children's fiction.

Disclosure: I did not receive anything for this review. All opinions are entirely my own.

Picture Perfect Party Linky #22

I got a new camera for Christmas from my in-laws and took about 400 photos over three days. I've put together several collages of the best ones. These pictures were taken at my in-laws' beach house. They are not featured in these photos, although I have featured them before. There's a really sweet photo of them with Amanda on my post, A Big Day for Our Daughter. The grandparents in these pictures are my husband's grandparents, which makes them our children's great-grandparents. We don't often get to see them, so this was a very special time for all of us.

I recommend that you click on the collages with smaller images to view them bigger. Also, take time to check out the expressions on people's faces. I also have a Wordless Wednesday linky at the bottom of this post. Leave me a comment with a link if you want me to visit you. Thanks!

Make My Saturday Sweet - Blog Hop #21

My in-laws live at the beach on South Africa's West Coast. We have spent several Christmases and holidays there. Here are four photos of Amanda, two from previous years and two from our Christmas 2012.

Also, I've been avoiding the internet and my computer for the most part these past couple of weeks. I spent some of that time baking cookies, walking on the beach, watching movies and shopping. If you sent me an email or left a comment on one of my posts, there's a good chance that I'm still going to get back to you. I try to keep in touch with everyone. It's important to me, because I really enjoy the company of people and that includes my online community.

Today's blog hop is different. I want you to link your favorite post from the past week or so. My most recent post went up without me spreading the word. Needless to say, it didn't get many page views. The pictures are great, so I hope you pop over to my post on Christmas Cookies.

I will try to visit everyone who links, but you have a better chance of a visit if you also leave me a comment letting me know which link belongs to you.

Christmas Cookies - Gingerbread and Stars

Merry Christmas to my online community! I won't be posting my Picture Perfect Party Linky and my Make My Saturday Sweet blog hops this week. As I type this message, I'm not even at home. I'm working from my mother-in-laws computer. So, you'll get to see what we've been up to once we're back home.

I wish everyone a peaceful and joyful Christmas!

Many ladies are in a cookie baking frenzy this time of year. Even I got in on the action. I was having a cookie craving and so I tried different recipes for the fun of it. Since I didn’t want to make myself fat on all the yummy treats coming from my oven, I decided to bake for others. Normally we give the teachers a gift at Christmas time, so this year I made little baskets of home baked goodies for them and for some friends and family too.

I must say, baking is more work than buying a small gift, but it was worth it. Will I do it again next year? Maybe, but next time I might only bake for a few people and buy gifts for the others. It doesn’t make much sense to have the oven running in the heat of our South African summer, which runs around December through March.

So, here are two of my creations that I made for the very first time, Christmas Stars and Gingerbread Men. For some reason, I enjoy improvising. I also try to go with healthier options when I’m baking, but I do have a sweet tooth.

The recipe for the stars came from this Spiderweb Sugar Cookies recipe, which would be fun for Halloween. I was looking for a sugar cookie recipe on the web and saw that this one was well liked and included a Royal Icing recipe.

I followed all the steps up to the point of cutting the dough into circles. This is where I chose star shapes instead. I decided not to ice / frost them as I found the Royal Icing to be too thick and looked clumpy on the cookie. I also found that you need a heck of a lot of red food coloring to make it look red, so my batch of “red” icing (which looked more like a hot pink) never got used. My food coloring is the artificial kind, which can’t be healthy, and I found that it also changes the taste of it, so those were further reasons why I chose not to use it.

You can see in the photos below what I decided to do with the red icing. It became a sensory activity for Amanda. I let her taste it too, but only a tiny bit.

I used my white Royal Icing for the gingerbread men. That worked out really well. I used this Gingerbread Men recipe, which also has its own icing / frosting recipe. If you look at my photos, you’ll see that I stuck with white.

Make My Saturday Sweet - Blog Hop #20

Paper Candy Cane Activity

I got this paper candy cane activity idea from Julie at Hey Mommy, Chocolate Milk. Her pictures are really sweet and she used red and green pipe cleaners instead. I used what I had on hand, which was red and green paper.

This is a really easy activity for small children. I cut white candy canes out of paper, glued them on a green cardboard, then cut small strips of red and green paper for decorating. All Amanda had to do was to create patterns with her strips of paper on the white candy canes. She wanted someone to play with her, so I decorated one of the candy canes too. She had a lot of fun and played with the left-over strips of paper with her plastic kitchen dishes.

I also printed some fun free Christmas printables from Julie too. Amanda enjoyed them very much.

Christmas Tree Game

I printed this sweet game for free from Allyson at All Our Days. I don't plan to keep it forever, so I used normal paper and only printed the game pieces on cardboard. I didn't have white (which is what Allyson recommended), so I used yellow instead and was very happy with how well it worked.

This was the first time that I played a game with Amanda where you are on the same team. If you win, you win together. If you lose, you lose together. It certainly stops all the whining, fighting, and crying when the one child loses and the other wins. Of course, children need to learn about having the right attitude when they win or lose, but it's certainly nice as a mom to have a break from being the coach, teacher, referee and counselor.

There is a naughty kitty in the game, which is hilarious for me, because we have recently added a kitten to our family. If you spin and land on the kitty, it knocks an ornament off of the tree. You win when all the ornaments are on the tree once you've reached the finish line.

Amanda loves the game and has played it with me, her sisters and her friend, Sarai. It was easy enough that she could explain the rules to the others. I think this game was too easy. You win more often than you lose, but Amanda hasn't figured that out yet. She still gets excited with every win.

Picture Perfect Party Linky #21

Christmas in Bethlehem
This is our three-dimensional nativity scene and advent calendar.
My mother-in-law gave it to us several years ago and it still looks
beautiful. I love all the details and whimsical characters.
It's published by the Standard Publishing Company
in Cincinnati, Ohio.

These are some of my German Christmas decorations.
Only the bells are not. Amanda picked out the bells
this holiday season and decorated the tree with her
sister, Samantha.

This is Samantha's kitten, Tabitha. As you can see,
she's getting bigger. We adopted her from the animal
shelter at six weeks of age.

This is our latest advent calender. My in-laws were
recently in England and my mother-in-law bought
this at Harrods for the grand-kids. It's by
Tracey Russell Designs.
