3 Picture Books by Patricia Furstenberg

Tea-Party with Animal Friends from Books
by Patricia Furstenberg

Ana lives in the “Rainbow Country.” Grown-ups and Teachers call it the ‘Rainbow Nation,” but Ana likes to think she lives under a rainbow. Not that it rains a lot, actually most days are sunny here and she loves it. You can have a picnic any day and not worry about the weather!

Last night she worried. “Do you think it will be sunny tomorrow, Ma’?” she asked at bedtime half knowing it will be, half longing for her mother’s confirmation. Whenever Ma' said “yes” it meant yes and that was good to know!

“Yes, all sunny weather for your picnic, Ana,” smiled Mom bending to tug her in. Her hair was soft as it brushed Ana’s cheek and it smelled sweet… like Ma'. “Will they ALL be coming?” Mom’s eyebrows went up, a little worried.

There was a party scheduled for tomorrow, a picnic in their garden, and Ana invited ALL her animal friends. The ones that live in books. You didn’t think she would invite REAL ones, would you? Ana lives in South Africa. Would you invite a real lion to your picnic? I didn’t think so… There would be nothing left to eat for the rest of the party!

Ana picked up her guest list. “Winnie the Pooh and Friends,” were at the top of the list. How else, she grew up with “silly, old bear” and learned her grade 1 spelling with “T-I double G-ER.”

“Honey, cake and carrots,” checked Mom on her own list.

“Joyful Trouble,” smiled Ana. “Grandad will be happy to see him again!”

When her grandfather was a young sailor in Simon’s Town, long, long, long ago, during The Second World War, he was in charge with a fantastic dog, a huge dog, a friendly dog, Joyful Trouble the Great Dane. He was the first dog ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy! Ana had a stuffed dog looking exactly the same whom she lovingly called “Joyful Trouble.”

“Bones,” smiled Mom. “He’s always been an easy dog to please.”

“As long as he's not asking for fresh fish!” giggled Ana, remembering the story. Then, eyeing the smudge on Mom’s paper went on: “Paddington Bear!”

“Marmalade sandwich!” laughed Mom.

“Lion and Dog,” said Ana next, following her list and tapping it with a finger. Then she glanced over to Mom’s sheet. “Do we have enough meat? What if Lion is hungry?” Lion and Dog were Ana’s new friends from “The Lion and the Dog”, a story she enjoyed very much because it reminded her that size doesn’t matter when one makes new friends. She especially liked the last illustration where all the zoo animals gathered around the Christmas tree while children sang Christmas carols.

Mom didn't look worried, “he is a rather small lion, isn’t he? And he does chew an occasional bone… we have plenty of those! How many dogs are invited to your picnic?”

“Four!” laughed Ana. “Puppy is coming too and then there’s Dog, Cheetah’s best friend in the whole African plain!”

“Puppy is a sweet little fellow, we have milk but, knowing him, he’d like to taste a little bit of everything from the table!” Mom winked. They both enjoyed reading “Puppy, 12 Months of Rhymes and Smiles” at bedtime, one poem each night. It was fun to cuddle together and see how the little dog grew, one poem at a time. Ana enjoyed to find out what mischievous adventures Puppy happened to… fall into!

“What will we feed Cheetah, Ma?” Cheetah the cub befriended Dog in “The Cheetah and the Dog” proving that different souls can be friends even if they look different. People became so captivated by their unusual story that almost overnight “The Cheetah and the Dog” had been spun into an African folktale. Ana thought about the book illustration in which Cheetah and Dog shared a meal of steak and eggs cooked over a camp fire!

“I’ll make sure we have small bits of meat,” Mom pointed towards the bottom of her list where a big exclamation mark stood beside “meat!” “Anyone else?”

“Only The Elephant and the Sheep,” smiled Ana looking like a lamb herself. This was the third book in the collection and Ana had fallen in love with the gentle baby elephant and his friendly, yet curious lamb companion. Reading the book she was surprised to discover that an elephant calf can hold such a big secret. She loved the happy ending; it reminded her of her mom’s favorite song, “Imagine”. Just like the illustration depicting the two new friends enjoying a quiet African sunset together under the sparkling light of friendly stars.

“Grass for them and sleep for you!” said Mom as she kissed Ana good night.

“Ma’,” whispered Ana half asleep, “will you come to our picnic too?”

And Mom smiled just as the moon and the stars smiled in the sky. “Yes, I'll come," and Ana knew that she will.

About the Author:
Patricia Furstenberg

Patricia Furstenberg

Patricia Furstenberg came to writing though reading, her passion for books being something she inherited from her parents. She won two key legs (chapter six, "Someone is Missing" and chapter nine, "Reconstruction of the Crime") of the Write Your Own Christie Competition and was runner-up for chapter four. The Judges "were impressed by her thorough investigation and admired the strength of her narrative; they were impressed by her style" and congratulated Patricia on winning the penultimate chapter. "This was perhaps one of the hardest rounds of the competition and the judges felt that Patricia's chapter was confident and intriguing." The judges thought Patricia's writing style is "well structured, with a great sense of tension and suspense."

The Judges were Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie's grandchild involved in publishing and promoting her books since 1960s, David Brawn, Agatha Christie's Publisher at Harper Collins UK for the last 20 years and Daniel Mallory who works primarily with thrillers and crime fiction at Harper Collins US.

When she’s not writing Patricia likes to read, read, read, drink coffee and listen to music. One of the characters portrayed in her children stories is Pete, the yellow toy elephant. Not many know, but Pete exists and lives in Pat's home. This Romanian born writer is living happily with her husband, children and dogs in sunny South Africa.

MY REVIEW

Bessie, Queen of the Sky is a beautifully illustrated picture book that brings to life the true story of a girl who had the courage to follow her dreams no matter what roadblocks she faced along the way. This book teaches that a person's gender, skin color, or social position does not equate with ability. As long as you are willing to work hard and persevere, you can be just as good or better than anyone else.

In an ideal world, all people ought to have equal opportunities. Unfortunately, our daughters are not growing up in an ideal world, but things are changing. My own daughters do not feel the same restrictions that I felt growing up and I believe this has a lot to do with the brave women who went before us. We can be thankful for girls and women like Bessie who have trail blazed ahead, making it easier for us to follow in their steps.

When I got to the end of the story, my 8-year old daughter, Amanda, was impressed to see the photograph of Bessie and to learn that it was based on a true story. For me, this has been one of my favorite picture books that I did with her this year. It was truly inspirational. I highly recommend it for girls ages 4 to 8.

Planet Scrabbage and the Vegerons by [Cross, Paul Ian]

About the Book:

Title: Planet Scrabbage and the Vegerons | Author: Paul Ian Cross | Publisher: Farrow Children's Books | Genre: Children's Fiction | Pages: 17 | Recommended Age: 4 - 7

Book Description:

It's time we took a trip to Planet Scrabbage!

A vibrant, fresh and colourful, VEG-TASTIC happy place!

A hilariously silly rhyming picture book, for ages 4-7, about the importance of eating your veg!

Purchase on Amazon:
Paperback | Kindle

My Review:

Is your child a picky eater? Does he or she hate vegetables? The vegetables on Planet Scrabbage are called Vegerons and they will transport your child to a happy and healthy place.

Amanda (age 9) says that the story is cute and that kids will want to eat their vegetables so that they can be like the Vegerons. The Vegerons are painters, explorers, athletes and more!

The illustrations are cheerful and the rhyming text is lots of fun. This book will make your picky eater giggle and want to try that green stuff on the plate!

Paul Ian Cross

Hello, earthlings! I'm a scientist and children's author based in London, UK.

I work in clinical research (developing new medicines) and I'm also studying for my PhD. I very much enjoy my science career but I also have a real passion for writing stories! I have been writing fiction for nearly ten years. I am developing a series of children's books that are both enjoyable and educational.

My young nephew Hayden influenced my decision to become an author. I loved seeing his reaction when my sister Michelle first read one of my stories to him!

In my spare time, I love going to new places and I try to have as many holidays as possible. My partner Adrian and I absolutely love Scotland, especially the Isle of Skye. We also recently travelled to the Philippines which is a beautiful country; we can't wait to go back.

So that brings us to now... I'm currently working on several new book ideas. I am now developing my first short story, Engella, into a middle-grade novel. I have five books planned for a brand new series – The Engella Chronicles.

I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Our Review:

Magelica's Voyage to the Land of the Fairies is the third book in the exciting Magelica's Voyage series. Magelica is half fairy and half human. She is raised by an adoptive human mother named Gri. Her friends are a pet dragon named Tris, a prince named Will, a unicorn named Goldy, and a warblegrif named Odin. Magelica and her friends go on an adventure to the Land of the Fairies to help her learn about her fairy mother and human father.

The story is lots of fun with easy to read text and captivating illustrations. This story teaches the value of friendship, learning to accept people who are different, choosing positive thoughts, and following your heart.

Amanda has enjoyed the Magelica's Voyage series since 2015 and says that the third book was the best! Her favorite page in the story is when Prince Will reads a scroll to Magelica that sets the friends on their adventure. Amanda can't wait for the next book in the series. Talon, On the Wing

Talon, On the Wing
Book 2 in the Talon series

Talon, On the Wing by [Sedlmayer, Gigi]

About the Book:

Title: Talon, On the Wing (Book 2 in the Talon series) | Author: Gigi Sedlmayer | Publisher: Aurora House | Genre: Survival Story | Pages: 422 | Recommended Age: 10 and up

Book Description:

This highly entertaining story about a girl with a disability that keeps her trapped in a shorter body of a two-year-old is a treasure to read!

Her personality will delight you, and the Indians add to the entertainment.

The condors are the real characters here. It is like watching a cartoon as you read the mischief and the adventures of these birds.

What challenged Matica has dreamed ever since she first saw and befriended the condors, Tamo and Tima, is actually happening with their offspring Talon she and her father had rescued from poachers. And now the incredible, unbelievable, remarkable and wonderful adventures with Talon begins after the incident that happened in Matica's hut.

This is a coming-of-age story where Matica is learning patience, forgiveness and trust.

Again, another story about friendship and freedom, about intercultural aspects in South America, and the dilemmas the main character is facing.

During the ride there is adventure and suspense.

Purchase on Amazon

My Review:

I read a chapter of Talon, On the Wing almost every night to Amanda. The book has 80 chapters, so it took us a few months. Some chapters got a giggle out of Amanda, others were more contemplative, and a few were suspenseful or even tragic.

This is the second book in the series. It was a more reflective and introspective book about Matica's relationships with herself, her family, the villagers in their small town in Peru, and the magnificent condors. Two main themes were forgiveness and acceptance.

Gigi has the ability to draw us into the story and live it along with Matica who is a 10-year-old girl with a growth defect and the daughter of missionaries. Matica learns to embrace her differences and to discover that her small stature isn't a limitation. In fact, adversity can come as a blessing in disguise. In Matica's case, it makes it possible for her to fly on Talon, the condor that she raised from an egg. Gigi blends reality with imagination with the condors who are able to communicate with Matica with grunts and looks. They are also able to understand Matica's words.

This story was very long for a children's book with 422 pages. Some of the content was repetitive, so it could have been shortened without losing the message. I thought that it was sweet that Matica had a love interest in the story, but I thought that the professed love between them was too deep for their age. There were also a few parts that were not appropriate for all ages. These included suicidal thoughts (which were hinted at), child sacrifice that was practiced by the Incas was mentioned, and child abandonment resulting in death when a child was born with a disability (which was still being practiced by some villagers).

My Review of Book 1:
Talon, Come Fly with Me

About the Author:
Gigi Sedlmayer

Gisela (Gigi) Sedlmayer was born on 19 May 1944 in Potsdam, a suburb of Berlin in Germany.
Her family escaped to the West just before the infamous wall went up. They moved around in Germany, wherever her dad got work. That meant she had to change schools 9 times! In the end she stopped making friends for fear that she would lose them again.

Finally they settled in Munich where Gigi studied architectural drafting and met Albert in 1965, marrying in December 1967. She worked as a civil draftsperson in various private consultancies in Munich.

Since her uncle was a writer, she tried to write short animal stories herself. Nothing further came of it, but she developed a love for the written word and started to consume books.

In May 1975, Gigi and her husband moved to New Zealand. Because of language challenges, she started a handcraft business. As a specialty, she made colourful parrots in several sizes of which she sold thousands in a few years.

In 1988, they decided to adopt and became adoptive parents of twin girls the year after. They lived in New Zealand for eighteen years and moved to Australia in September 1992.

Two years later Gigi was diagnosed with cancer. After operations and radiation, she withdrew, thinking that she would probably soon be dead, like her friend who died of cancer, but her two little girls gave her the courage to keep going. After a few years, still among the living, her brain started to work again, so she thought, 'Get a grip on yourself and do something good with your life'.

She remembered the time she wrote short stories and got inspired again, seeing her husband Albert writing the story of their adoption. Her English became increasingly better so she pressed on to develop her creative writing.

Albert taught her how to use a computer and she wrote many short stories. She entered them in competitions and often got very good reports back, which gave her confidence to go on writing. One day the idea for the TALON series came to her and she spent the next several years bringing the story and the characters to life.

She now loves writing and spends most of her time at the computer, developing new story lines. She also loves travelling, 4x4 touring, swimming, gardening, handcrafting, reading, fossicking and enjoys good adventure DVD's or going to the movies.

My Review:

Amanda and I were thrilled to receive a new picture book from one of our favorite Indie authors, Elsa Takaoka and her amazing illustrator, Catherine Toenisson. These two have been a dynamic team and I hope to see more from them! The book that Elsa gave us is Yumi's Extraordinary Collection. It's the first time she wrote a multicultural story and for an older age group. The recommended age on Amazon is 6 to 9, but my 16-year-old was drawn to the book and read it for herself!

Amanda and I really enjoyed the story. I think it's cleverly written with just the right amount of wonder and discovery. Amanda learned a few new words like porcelain and kimono. This story teaches the value of family, multi-generations and being yourself. I highly recommend it for all children.

How it all began...

Sylvia Medina is someone who is passionate about the environment and the animals that live in this world. As a youngster she loved to hike and enjoy the wilderness and especially loved animals. She took this passion and dedicated herself to becoming an Environmental Engineer where she could help make a difference.

Another passion Sylvia found was children! When her twins were born she knew she wanted to instill in them the passion of being stewards of our environment. So when Sylvia's twins were infants - she found herself watching television shows for kids. This made her realize that there were few programs about environmental stewardship and endangered species preservation for children. So one early morning - about 1:30 am - while rocking her baby girl to sleep she came up with the idea of creating stories and products that teach children about the environment and the world around them. So the Green Kids Club was created.

Pammee and the Looking Pond

Our Review of Pammee
and the Looking Pond:

Pammee and the Looking Pond was Amanda's favorite book in the YooHoo and Friends series. Pammee is an adorable fennec fox who loves looking at her reflection in the looking pond. However, she gets a fright when her reflection is distorted. What could the problem be? Pammee has a friend named Maya who helps her solve the case. At the end of the story are some fun facts about the fennec fox and tips on how to save our water. I highly recommend this picture book for kids ages 4 - 8.

Sparkee and the Stinky Treasure

Our Review of Sparkee
and the Stinky Treasure:

Sparkee and the Stinky Treasure was Amanda's second favorite book in the YooHoo and Friends series. The illustrations are bright and friendly and the characters are adorable. Sparkee is a skunk and his friend Lemmee is a lemur. They meet up with their friend Tiago.

There is a mysterious bad smell that gets blamed on Sparkee, but then Tiago and Lemmee go investigate where the smell is coming from. Follow their adventure and learn some fun facts about skunks and help prevent pollution. I highly recommend this picture book for kids ages 4 - 8.
