Cut to the Heart

Book Blurb:

All Josie Framer wants is a man with fire magic—and to find the truth-knife that’s rightfully hers.

However, neither of these quests is going well.

After her latest date-turned-disaster, she's almost ready to give up—when she happens along the blade on the way home. Unfortunately, reclaiming her property makes her target of the Arcane Market, a nefarious underground trafficking ring for magical artifacts and magical beings.

To make things worse, she keeps running into Oliver Salamandras, a dangerously attractive fire elemental who’s on the run from his own hunters. Getting involved with him means more trouble. Plus he has enough baggage for an aircraft carrier.

If only he wasn’t just what she's looking for--right at the worst possible moment.

Faced with deadly foes and an irresistible stranger, a woman might just do something crazy.
Drastic.
Life-changing.

My Review:

Cut to the Heart by Janeen Ippolito is Book 1 of The Arcane Market Adventures. It is a two-book companion duology to The Steel City Genie urban fantasy series - a series within a series. It also has references to The Accidental Alien Romance Chronicles, taking place after My Alien Boyfriend and before My Alien Engagement. All of that might sound confusing, but the author does take the time to introduce some of the characters before jumping into Josie's story, who we first meet in The Steel City Genie series. Ippolito likes mashing things up and writing quirky characters. Her stories are fast-paced and laced with plenty of humor. It's good fun romantic fantasy with some deeper moments. This one has a strong Christian message in it too.

My Alien Engagement

My Alien Engagement (Book 2)
The Accidental Alien Romance Chronicles

She’s engaged. She’s transformed. She’s ready for anything. Except her future in-laws...

Kelley Vanders-Froggett’s life is finally in order again: she’s on break from a great job, she has a supportive family, and she has Anthony Salamandras, her hot alien fiancé who’s making it all too hard to wait for the altar. Yeah, she’s still figuring out his culture, but everything is finally falling into place for their life together on Earth.

Then Anthony’s brother shows up declaring Kelley unworthy to marry into his family—unless she passes ancient trials. Never mind that these trials haven’t been used in generations. Either Kelley proves herself worthy, or she’ll be separated from Anthony forever.

Three trials, no warnings, and everything on the line. But Kelley’s already survived one fiery test, and she’s not going home without her man, no matter what it takes.

My Alien Engagement is the second novelette in The Accidental Alien Romance Chronicles, a series of short romantic satires featuring a sassy heroine, a hot alpha with a side of derp, a sweet core, and a fiery happily-ever-after.

My Review:

This satirical romance novelette has a large cast of characters in a few short chapters. A couple of cameos pop in from Ippolito's The Steel City Genie series too! You'll need to read Book 1 (My Alien Boyfriend) first to fully understand what's going on. It's a fun quick read with some hot kissing! Kelley and Anthony go through so much in such a short amount of time that I wish we could have had one more chapter with them enjoying each other at the end.

Reformed: Supervillain Rehabilitation Project

Launching May 1st, the first in a new
superhero series by H.L. Burke!

Book Description:

Once a villain, always a villain?

Optimistic and idealistic superhero Prism is determined to redeem her father’s legacy by rebooting his super villain rehabilitation program. To do so, she sets her sights on Fade, the relapsed super villain who was the reason the government canceled the original program in the first place. However, when she petitions for Fade to be released into her custody, she finds out things might not be as simple as she thought.

Convicted of an unforgivable crime, Fade received a choice: surrender to trial and possible execution or endure a memory erasure so he could start fresh. Now with no recollection of his time before incarceration, Fade doubts he has the ability to be anything but the villain the public believe him to be.

A series of attacks by a mysterious power-swapping villain points back to Fade’s past and the crime that cost him his freedom and memory. With her father's legacy and her own reputation on the line, even Prism has to wonder: can a villain truly be reformed?

Pre-order sale on now!

My Review:

Watch out for this brand new series by the genre hopping author, H.L. Burke! I beta read this one and it was so much fun! It has wonderful characters, witty banter, romance, action, and suspense. Prism is the optimistic team leader who has a vision to see supervillains reformed and working as superheroes. Her first project is to take on Fade, a particularly challenging case. He was given a second chance previously and messed it up abominably. Has Prism bitten off more than she can chew? It certainly seems that way when things begin going horribly wrong. I'm already looking forward to the next book!

Content: some strong language and violence

My Review:

The Rescue Nurse is a unique take on an action packed thriller. It's intense and unpredictable with a complicated romance, but also highly entertaining. One twisted event left me reeling. Once you start reading, it will be hard to put the book down. I'm hoping J. Philip Horne will continue writing books about Rescue Nurse Worldwide and make it into a series with new characters for each book, but with favorite characters from previous books making an appearance.

About the Author:
J. Philip Horne

J. Philip Horne

J. Philip Horne probably shouldn't be alive. Born in Florida, he grew up overseas for the most part, spending much of his childhood in Liberia and Micronesia. During those years, he experienced numerous attempts on his life. The wannabe killers included malaria, spinal meningitis, blood poisoning, a staph infection in his heel bone, a close encounter with a green mamba, and other cold-hearted foes.

From his earliest years, his parents read to him fantastical stories from wonderful worlds. Narnia and Middle Earth featured prominently, and had his youth been a generation later, he would have certainly encountered Hogwarts at a young age. Through his teen years he read stories by many other authors and experienced a host of new worlds.

After dabbling in writing for many years, he finally got serious and wrote his first novel in 2011. He has continued to write ever since. For news of upcoming works, please join Mr. Horne's email list at jphiliphorne.com.

Tangled Fae Book 2

Fae Captive (Tangled Fae Book 2) by [Wilson, Sarah K. L.]

About the Book:

Title: Fae Captive (Tangled Fae Book 2) | Author: Sarah K.L. Wilson | Pages: 200 | Genre: Folklore Adaptation | Recommended Ages: Young Adult and Up

Book Description:

Think you could craft the perfect bargain?

From USA Today bestselling author Sarah K. L. Wilson comes a deliciously trope-filled young adult romantic fantasy about a viciously humorous mortal girl and her quest to hunt, trap, and conquer powerful fae.

Allie Hunter thought all she had to do was make an exchange to buy back her father's life. She was wrong. Mortals are so often wrong about the Faewald. Usually, that kills them, or mires them in bargains that will suck their life out sip by sip.

With Allie caught in a cage and the Fae she had once tormented her new captor, can she strike the right bargain to save everything she loves?

Purchase on Amazon Kindle!

My Review:

Fae Captive is the second book in the brand new Tangled Fae series by Sarah K.L. Wilson. The story starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. There are heart-pounding twists and turns with gruesome scenes and plenty of action. The chemistry between Allie and Scouvrel is intense. Just a kiss can make Allie’s world shift and change her made-up mind. But out of the two, who will have the upper hand? This book ends at a good stopping point, but it will leave you breathless for more! If you like fantasy and adventure with some romance, then you'll enjoy Sarah's books. She writes YA, but I would place her latest series at Upper YA.

The Sorcerer's Quest and More!

Three Gaslamp (Steampunk) Fantasy box sets that are on sale for $0.99 each! I have previously read books by all of these authors and I highly recommend their work. I also own all three series, but I have only read the Sorcerer's Quest and have included my review below.

Sorcerer's Quest

Sorcerer's Quest (Complete Trilogy): An Epic Fantasy Completed Trilogy by [Baldron, NAK]

Sorcerer's Quest on Amazon
for only $0.99!

My Review:

Wow! This was my first introduction to Nak Baldron's writing and he's a great storyteller! I got so caught up in his characters and their stories, especially orphan Ren and his mentor Brandon, that as soon I finished Book 1, I picked up Book 2, and then bought the box set when it went on sale, so I could read Book 3!

Orphan's Price is a fitting title as Ren has to count the cost to have a chance at a better life. He doesn't have the type of intelligence that is prized in his part of the world, but he has magic, which is prized in other lands. Life for Ren isn't fair and bullies make it almost unbearable for him, but Ren doesn't give up.

The second book introduces two new people, a girl who must become the new clan leader and her young champion. I got so caught up in Shaya and Akio's characters that I went on to read Salt and Steel that tells Akio's story!

Ren is totally out of his element in the Sapphire Nation, but I'm looking forward to watching him grow and become a formidable force. In this book his magic doesn't get used. Perhaps he should have had some time to practice, even if only in his room. Brandon, on the other hand, gets to shine in his own way back in the Pearl Nation.

We continue Ren's adventures in the third book. Ren, Shaya, and Akio are young adults who have left childhood behind a long time ago, although Ren is still the gentlest of the three. In this story, we also get to know the royal twins, Adaku and Abaze, and what has made them who they are today when they're at the sorcerer's trial. Ren is languishing in jail and worried that he won't even make it to the trials! The question is, if he does make it, will he be ready?

This episode has lots happening with many good scenes. It was a little choppy in places like when switching POVs, but it’s such an interesting story that I didn’t mind having to reread pieces. I definitely want to find out what happens next!

Purchase on Amazon:

My Review:

This is my first time reviewing an audiobook on my blog. I am really enjoying Jeffrey L. Kohanek's Fate of Wizardoms series. I included links to my reviews for the prequel and Book 1 below. Balance of Magic is Book 2. It's a lot of fun listening to Travis Baldree narrate the story and he doesn't exagerate the different voices, which I find can be jarring. On the other hand, some of the voices (especially belonging to the female characters) are almost the same. I still think he does a fabulous job with such a big cast of characters. It helps that the author writes descriptively with just enough information, so it's easy to identify who is talking and who is thinking to themselves even with the different scene changes and varying points of view.

Whether you grab the audiobook or read it yourself, this series has everything to keep your attention. The pacing is good, the scenes are exciting, and the characters are believable. There's even a twist at the end that I didn't see coming! Now I want to know more about that scene, because it opens up a whole bunch of new questions. I'm looking forward to continuing the adventure in Temple of the Oracle (Book 3)!

Fae Hunter (Tangled Fae Book 1) by [Wilson, Sarah K. L.]

About the Book:

Title: Fae Hunter (Tangled Fae Book 1) | Author: Sarah K.L. Wilson | Pages: 224 | Genre: Folklore Adaptation | Recommended Ages: Young Adult and Up

Book Description:

Can one mortal take on all of Faerieland?

From USA Today bestselling author Sarah K. L. Wilson comes a deliciously trope-filled young adult romantic fantasy about a viciously humorous mortal girl and her quest to hunt, trap, and conquer powerful fae.

Our lives are nursery rhymes and faerie stories now, Allie.

When Allie Hunter's twin sister steps through a magic circle into the Faerie realm, she opens the door to deadly fae, bent on causing havoc and harm to Allie's village.

Rendered blind to all but the spirit world, Allie is frustrated and angry but determined to bring the fae down. No matter what that might cost her.

But in a world where lies are truth, power is sustenance, and every action ripples into violence, how can one mortal stop all of Faerieland?

Only $0.99 on Amazon Kindle!
This is a sale price. Please check, as the price may change.

My Review:

Fae Hunter by Sarah K.L. Wilson is the first book in a brand new series that puts a twist on the fae. They aren't what they seem and Allie, the human hunter, is out to kill them. Allie is facing monsters, trying to protect her village from worse than they’ve already experienced, but the people have lost faith in her. It doesn’t help that the boy she loves is interested in someone else or that she’s attracted to one particular Fae that she’s caught and plans to kill. Things go from bad to worse for Allie. This is a series and ends at a good stopping point, but also a cliffhanger. Once you start you won’t want to stop! If you like fantasy and adventure with some romance, then you'll enjoy Sarah's books. She writes YA, but I would place her latest series at Upper YA.

Happy Thanksgiving and 2 Free eBooks!

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

I have 2 free eBooks for you today! I haven't read either book, but I plan to read something from the Thanksgiving book out loud to the family, especially the Thanksgiving jokes, today. It's not a picture book, but there is an illustration at the start of each story. For this reason, I think kids around ages 6 - 8 will enjoy the stories more than the younger ones. And, no one is too old for jokes! The second book is a steampunk adventure that I've been wanting to read. I was so excited to see the author list it for free for the Thanksgiving weekend!

Romano Family Series Books 5 and 6

Kiss Me at Midnight

Kiss Me At Midnight (Romano Family Book 5) by [Whitney, Lucinda]

My Review:

Kiss Me at Midnight (Book 5) is a fabulous romance that isn't easy to put down. It has characters that will stir your heart and it will make you sigh happily with just enough suspense to keep the story moving.

Filipe Romano is the new owner of SoliMar beach resort, which comes with an aquarium that isn't making any money. He has plans to fix it up in order to sell, but when he finds an old childhood sweetheart that he left behind years ago working there, he begins questioning his plans.

Celeste Ferreira knew Filipe growing up, but hasn't seen him since her brother's funeral. She was a teenager then, but now she's a single mother and works at the SoliMar Aquarium. Life has been hard, but she keeps going with a positive smile for her son's sake. Becoming reacquainted with Filipe brings a whole gamut of emotions her way, which complicates her life further. She wonders why he left in the first place and he struggles with having to face the past.

This is a clean romance and another wonderful edition to the Romano Family series. Each story is a stand-alone, written in chronological order.

Marry Me at Dawn

Marry Me At Dawn (Romano Family Book 6) by [Whitney, Lucinda]

My Review:

Marry Me at Dawn (Book 6) is my favorite book and the final one in the Romano Family series! The story is a page-turner, which gets so intense toward the end that my heart was pounding! It's a well-thought-out marriage of convenience that had me rooting for both Damian and Gabriela. The characters are memorable, even though I did want to hit Damian upside the head when things started going downhill. Gabriela and Claire are wonderfully written. Baby Claire is a good introduction for soon-to-be parents with all the sacrifice and joy that babies bring. Luke is an awesome friend and he needs his own romance story!

It was good that cultural differences and challenges were briefly noted. There were a couple of quick scene changes, but one was particularly abrupt when Damian's mom takes Gabriela shopping. I was hoping that Gabriela would be able to put some of her advertising expertise to good use in helping Damian, but things never went that direction. I would have liked to have seen more of the Romano cousins. The epilogue felt a bit rushed with naming off Romano family members.

Even though this is a clean romance, there is sexual tension between Damian and Gabriela. Those parts were fun to read, but I would suggest that it's better suited for older teenagers and up.

My Reviews of Books 1 - 3:

Departing

Departing: A Thrilling Romantic Apocalyptic Series with Aliens (Earth's Only Hope Book 1) by [Schultz, Joynell]

About the Book:

Title: Departing (Earth's Only Hope Book 1) | Author: Joynell Schultz | Pages: 284| Genre: Science-Fiction | Recommended Ages: Young Adult and Up

Book Description:

Live or die, stay or go, the choice is meant to be easy...

I can either board an alien spaceship with my fellow criminals or rot in prison on a dying Earth.

The spacecraft's captain, a handsome alien who looks remarkably human, has been visiting me in my dreams for over a year. He has given me the companionship I need during my time locked up in solitary confinement and the way he holds me in the dark makes me forget the Earth is on the brink of extinction.

In the midst of another ice age, humanity will be wiped out soon, but the alien spacecraft gives hundreds of us another option. If I get on that ship, I have a chance at surviving.

And I’m a survivor.

Only a deadly disease is spreading among the aliens and has already wiped out three-quarters of their population. It appears to be a virus, but as the aliens continue dying despite all precautions, I begin to wonder if the disease is something else.

How do I keep the man I’ve fallen in love with safe?
And if he dies, along with the rest of his alien race, how will us humans manage a ship filled with unknown technology?

But if the disease also wipes out the humans on board, none of this will even matter.

Connecting (Prequel): Available in the Rogue Skies Box Set
Departing (Book 1): Available now
Surviving (Book 2): Coming this fall
Returning (Book 3): Coming this winter

My Review:

Wow! This was an unputdownable story! It gripped me from the beginning right through to the end! Nothing is as it seems and no one is perfect. Does love conquer all or will survival instincts have the last say?

Even though this is Book 1, there is a prequel novella called Connecting in the Rogue Skies collection. It's also a good story with different main characters who get mentioned in Departing. There was a good stopping point in both the prequel and first book, but the adventures have only just begun! I can't wait to read further!
