Our Review:

Amanda (age 12) received Indescribable as a gift from her grandma a couple of years ago. It became a well-loved book that she has read about 4 times.

Amanda keeps the book by her bed. She likes that every new chapter is a new topic about natural science and God. She has learned a lot and thinks it’s very interesting.

I like the way the book is laid out with text and illustrations. It’s easy to follow with cool facts for kids. Louie Giglio helps kids to see God in science and makes learning fun.

Our Review:

Amanda was interested in this picture book, because her name was in the title. We had a lot of fun reading it. The story was entertaining with wonderful illustrations. The names in the story went from A - Z with Amanda in Atlanta and Bonnie in Boston, etc. There were familiar places and not so familiar ones. At the end of the story, there's a map with all the places mentioned in the book with a bit of information about each one. It's a great way to get to know the USA better for kids and their parents!

Inside the box are the Enchanted Sweaks of Yellowfield which take them on a fantastic journey through magical hidden lands with invisible creatures to find the disappearing river.

Amanda's Review:

I liked it because it had lots of fun riddles that you had to figure out. They gave you three clues to help you. They gave you little projects that you could do if you wanted. The stories were interesting with things like magical glasses and magical creatures.

My Review:

I did not read this book, but only had a peek at it, because Amanda (age 9) was motivated to read this story without me. That is proof that it's a fun story. She even read some of the riddles to me, which I enjoyed trying to figure out for myself! What really impressed me was that the authors have a passion to create books that get kids thinking while, at the same time, enjoying the adventures of Zoe and Alex.

About the Authors:

David Mittan

David was born in South Africa and he has lived in the US for almost 20 years. He is an avid cross-training fan, a voracious reader, loves learning new languages, and playing chess. David holds three degrees, including an MS from UT Austin and an MBA from MIT. He is a lifelong learner with interests in finance, human health, robotics and the future of education. He's also a highly experienced investor who enjoys solving problems. When he isn't busy sharing MakeThinkers with parents and educators across the world, David can be found spending time with his family, playing soccer with his two lovely daughters or strumming the guitar.

Gail is a superb elementary school educator with over 40 years of dedicated experience. She uses this extensive background to ensure that all our content is designed to maximize one goal — to help children unlock their natural creativity and powerful critical thinking skills while having fun. When she isn't busy creating delightful content with David at MakeThinkers, Gail enjoys spending time with her six grandchildren in New Jersey and continues to teach. She is also passionate about competing in walking races, crossword puzzles and gourmet cooking.

About MakeThinkers:

MakeThinkers grew out of my need to spend more quality time with my children in an impactful way. Using bedtime storytelling we were off to a good start. Its benefits were well known and widely published. Yet, it lacked that extra something. I'm sure you know about the eventual boredom that sets in with repetitive storytelling. Couldn't we use this time better? I set out to design and build a better experience.

During my time as a fellow at MIT, I began blending original storytelling with imaginative mental challenges. The goal was to combine creativity with critical thinking while forming a strong bond with my children. And, of course, short enough for me to complete in less than fifteen minutes.

I continued to experiment and tried many variations. I even asked some of my professors and friends around the world to try it out with their children. Finally, it happened! I hit the right combination.

My wife and I noticed that our family loved this new type of bedtime storytelling! Our children constantly yearned for more adventures and they were excited to solve the challenges at the end of each story! We also saw how they were beginning to mix creative thinking with logical reasoning. The way they solved problems blew our minds. On top of it all, we could also see them gaining confidence, patience, and focus. Naturally, we had a blast watching them flourish and our bond strengthened while having fun!

After experiencing this success, I had to share it with everyone. So, I started working with my mom to make it happen. She is a caring, passionate and highly accomplished elementary school educator. I grew up watching her teach and witnessing the smart ways she encouraged students to think. (Not to mention me - thanks mom!) She was a perfect fit to build out this vision.

Together we aim to take storytelling to a whole different level. We have made this entire activity straightforward and enjoyable for anyone to do. Our mission is simple: unlock the natural creativity and critical thinking skills in every child.

Through our first series, 'The Adventures of Zoe & Alex', we have put this mission into action.

We are thrilled to have you join us on this exciting journey. Get ready for a fantastic ride!

Remember, Great Parents MakeThinkers.

Amanda was given a free grade 2 online math game to try out using three-digit numbers. The game she played is Number Holdem 2.

"Bet your bones while building three-digit numbers with this comparing game! Kids will love Floyd and all of the characters in Education.com's collection of interactive math games."

She breezed through it quickly, but told me that other kids in her grade 3 class still struggle with this concept. She recommends the game for kids. You can find this game and many more free games like it at Education.com.

My Review:

Chicken Does Not Want to be a Chicken is the first book in a new beginner reader series created by the talented duo, author Elsa Takaoka and illustrator Catherine Toennisson. Even with the short sentences, the story was able to be funny with a hint at a deeper message. Being yourself and not trying to be someone else is best. Amanda (age 9) and I both think that this will be a fun book for kids learning to read.

Energy Saving Graph with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #218!

Do You Use Free Online Education for Your Kids?

It's been a while since I accessed free online educational sites for Amanda. Then, about a month ago, I heard of an excellent online educational site for kids called Education.com. It has different activities for Math and Reading from Pre-K to Grade 5. There is a free membership option and a couple of paid options, which are explained on the Description and Pricing page.

Amanda's favorite subject at school is Math. Education.com has colorful games and coloring multiplication worksheets to teach math in an engaging, low-stress manner that generates excitement. Check out the Math Resources page and see for yourself!

I was given a free activity to try at home with Amanda. It's a Household Energy Consumption Activity for Grade 3 that teaches Math using Data Collecting, Multiplication, and Graphing.

Here's the introduction that grabbed my attention:

Chances are, you find yourself saying it to your kids all the time: "Turn off the lights!" As energy costs rise and households continue to look for more ways to cut back, why not involve your third grader, too? Here's an activity that gives your third grader a chance to pull out her addition and multiplication skills to help your whole family take a good look at what those lights really do use up. Then, challenge your third grader to use the data to create bar graphs. What does it take to make those numbers go down?

The activity had guidelines and steps to follow, but seemed to be missing some nuts and bolts. I had to do research online to find out some necessary information. I also decided to change the activity to suit us better. You can follow our version below.

This blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.
Click on the images to see them at their best.

What is a Watt?

A Kilowatt Hour (kWh) is a unit for measuring energy. This is what you pay for when you buy energy from the local utility company. It is, as its name suggests, one kilowatt of power used over a period of one hour. A light bulb is typically 60 watts; leave it on for an hour and you have used 60 watt hours, or .06 kWh. Source: Blog Homebug

To explain this concept to Amanda, I compared the idea of measuring energy to a ruler for measuring length. Amanda took the example further and compared it to a clock measuring time. Now she knows that we can measure energy too!

We are no longer using the standard 60 Watt bulbs in our house. South Africans have changed over to the energy saving 11 Watt bulbs. Amanda went around the house counting all of our lights and then we did the comparisons. I let her work out the math with a calculator when she needed one and I asked her word sum questions, so that she had to think the steps through herself.

The cost of electricity in our activity is in South African rands. You can go online and find out what it costs in your area.

This is what we concluded:

60 Watt Light Bulb
4 hours a day
30 cents a day
22 light bulbs about R7 a day
22 light bulbs about R50 a week

11 Watt Light Bulb
4 hours a day
.06 cents a day
22 light bulbs about R1.50 a day
22 light bulbs about R10 a week

How much money do we save a week?
R40

In the graph we used centimeters. Our biggest number was R50 a week, so we measured 25cm as our longest line (every half a cm equals R1). Hubby helped us with the graph. Overall, it was a good learning experience for all of us.

Disclosure: I was given the free activity, which is free for everyone, and this is my honest opinion.

How it all began...

Sylvia Medina is someone who is passionate about the environment and the animals that live in this world. As a youngster she loved to hike and enjoy the wilderness and especially loved animals. She took this passion and dedicated herself to becoming an Environmental Engineer where she could help make a difference.

Another passion Sylvia found was children! When her twins were born she knew she wanted to instill in them the passion of being stewards of our environment. So when Sylvia's twins were infants - she found herself watching television shows for kids. This made her realize that there were few programs about environmental stewardship and endangered species preservation for children. So one early morning - about 1:30 am - while rocking her baby girl to sleep she came up with the idea of creating stories and products that teach children about the environment and the world around them. So the Green Kids Club was created.
