Horrors of Shark Finning and a Linky

Our family is very interested in protecting the environment. We are also interested in the fair treatment of animals. Amanda and I have had the honor of reviewing books along these topics. One topic that Amanda and I recently covered was on shark finning. She learned about it for the first time in The Shark and the Volcano. I get excited when I see authors reaching young readers by using fun stories to touch on important topics.

Shark finning is a horrific industry with around 73 million sharks being slaughtered a year. Their fins are often removed while the sharks are still alive! Amanda and I learned in our book review that people are willing to pay $150 for a bowl of shark fin soup! Watch the short video and visit the links to find out more. Our book review is also below.

The Shark and the Volcano

Our Review:

The Green Kids are on another adventure in The Shark and the Volcano. This one takes them to the waters of the Hawaiian Islands where they find out about the plight of sharks due to finning and their capture. Finning was a new word for Amanda. I had learned about the awful practice over a year ago and explained it to her. There is also an explanation at the back of the book. Amanda was surprised to read that people are willing to pay $150 for a bowl of shark fin soup! She also read other facts about sharks at the end of the book and was impressed to learn that sharks can have up to 3,000 teeth at one time!

In the story, the Green Kids ride dolphins and they meet a mystical warrior princess of the seas. Together they stop a group of fishermen from taking the fins from sharks. The princess tells the fishermen that what they are doing is wrong and that sharks are endangered. The princess warns them that if they don't stop, they will experience the wrath of the volcano.

Amanda and I enjoy the Green Kids Club picture book series. Not only are the stories fun, but there are neat things to be learned. We also care about animals and the environment. Let's make our kids, Green Kids!

How it all began...

Sylvia Medina is someone who is passionate about the environment and the animals that live in this world. As a youngster she loved to hike and enjoy the wilderness and especially loved animals. She took this passion and dedicated herself to becoming an Environmental Engineer where she could help make a difference.

Another passion Sylvia found was children! When her twins were born she knew she wanted to instill in them the passion of being stewards of our environment. So when Sylvia's twins were infants - she found herself watching television shows for kids. This made her realize that there were few programs about environmental stewardship and endangered species preservation for children. So one early morning - about 1:30 am - while rocking her baby girl to sleep she came up with the idea of creating stories and products that teach children about the environment and the world around them. So the Green Kids Club was created.

Desert Mirage

Our Review of

Desert Mirage:

One of the first books that Amanda picked up to read from the Green Kids Club series was Desert Mirage. She enjoyed reading about the wild horses of America. She learned a few new words too like "indigenous," which the horses are not.

At the beginning of the story is a map of the United States with the state of Arizona highlighted. In the story, Maya and her Green Kid friends go on an adventure through the canyon lands of Arizona to find water. Amanda's favorite line about the horses was that they symbolize the spirit of the American West. At the end of the story there are facts about the wild horses, new vocabulary words, tips about saving water, and more!

Amanda and I enjoy the Green Kids Club picture book series. Not only are the stories fun, but there are neat things to be learned. We also care about animals and the environment. Let's make our kids, Green Kids!

Wolf Howls

Our Review of

Wolf Howls:

Wolf Howls is a picture book from the Green Kids Club series. The Green Kids are children helping endangered animals and the environment. At the beginning of the story is a map of the United States with a highlighted belt that runs from the top of Alaska through Washington State and all the way down to the top of New Mexico - the Rocky Mountains mountain range.

The kids learn about the plight of the wolves. Humans have been hunting them to near extinction. The kids must find a cub that has gone missing, taken by poachers. Amanda learned a couple of new words like "constellation" and "ecosystem." At the end of the story are facts about wolves. Her favorite fact that she learned is that the reintroduction of wolves to the Rocky Mountains has been successful.

Amanda and I enjoy the Green Kids Club picture book series. Not only are the stories fun, but there are neat things to be learned. We also care about animals and the environment. Let's make our kids, Green Kids!

Pammee and the Looking Pond

Our Review of Pammee

and the Looking Pond:

Pammee and the Looking Pond was Amanda's favorite book in the YooHoo and Friends series. Pammee is an adorable fennec fox who loves looking at her reflection in the looking pond. However, she gets a fright when her reflection is distorted. What could the problem be? Pammee has a friend named Maya who helps her solve the case. At the end of the story are some fun facts about the fennec fox and tips on how to save our water. I highly recommend this picture book for kids ages 4 - 8.

Sparkee and the Stinky Treasure

Our Review of Sparkee

and the Stinky Treasure:

Sparkee and the Stinky Treasure was Amanda's second favorite book in the YooHoo and Friends series. The illustrations are bright and friendly and the characters are adorable. Sparkee is a skunk and his friend Lemmee is a lemur. They meet up with their friend Tiago.

There is a mysterious bad smell that gets blamed on Sparkee, but then Tiago and Lemmee go investigate where the smell is coming from. Follow their adventure and learn some fun facts about skunks and help prevent pollution. I highly recommend this picture book for kids ages 4 - 8.

Swimming Trip:

Amanda enjoyed the adventure story of YooHoo's Swimming Trip. YooHoo is a bush baby and his friend's name is Victor. They want to go swimming, but discover that the river is drying up. Where is the water going? Can they save the fish in time? Follow their adventure and learn some fun facts about bush babies. Also, learn about water and how to save and care for this natural resource of ours. I highly recommend this picture book for kids ages 4 - 8.

Imogen Taylor

Having worked for several years as a lawyer (for an international firm in London and for an environmental charity), I decided on a career change to pursue my first love - illustration and story writing.

It was very important to me that wildlife conservation was the main focus of my books and this led to the creation of The POWEs series. The characters (particularly Immy, Jonny and Moby) were inspired by a year long road trip I did some years ago around Australia with my partner in a campervan!

I feel extremely lucky to be doing what I love - raising awareness and funds for wildlife conservation through my illustrations and stories!

I believe, that for success in the conservation of our wilderness and endangered species, we have to engage with children as young as those who are just starting school.

My Review:

Amanda and I both enjoyed the first zany adventure of The POWEs and The Disappearing Tusks. POWEs stands for Protectors of Wildlife Endangered. In the team is Immy and Jonny who are both 7 years old. Then there is a little dragon friend named Shu and a butterfly named Boffy. Even the campervan is part of the team and his name is Moby.

We liked the illustrations and the creative ideas that the POWEs team come up with. We were impressed to find a kid-friendly map of the world with Africa highlighted. It's a great way to introduce kids to where the African elephant and rhino come from. Sadly, both the elephant and rhino are endangered because of evil people, called poachers, who kill them for their tusks and horns. The kids and their friends have to find a way to stop the poachers.

Every page has something fun and interesting with some great learning moments too! Besides learning where Africa is on the map and about poachers, kids also get introduced to a few Swahili words. The last page also has lots of interesting facts about elephants and rhinos.

This is a great book for girls and boys ages 5 - 9.
