The Super Bowl and Human Trafficking

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #161!

Many Americans are getting excited about the upcoming Super Bowl. There are lots of great snack ideas for those who celebrate the event with friends and family. I found this board by Cathy Cummins on Pinterest. (I don't know her. I just chose her board from a Google Search.) I thought it might be a fun resource for some of my readers: Football - Super Bowl Recipes.

I don't watch a lot of sports and American football has never been one of my interests. And, if you live outside of the States, "football" means "soccer" to most people.

Below is a photo of our girls at the time of the Soccer World Cup in 2010. They are wearing their South African supporter clothes. Notice how Amanda's shirt says, "I Love Football," and the picture is of a soccer ball. We live close enough to Cape Town that we made sure to see at least one of the games.

Yesterday, I came across a news report about the darker side of the huge Super Bowl event, namely human trafficking. It's a $32 billion industry with 100,000 - 300,000 kids at risk in the U.S. Watch the video below to find out more.

We had the same problem in South Africa with a spike in human trafficking during the Soccer World Cup. It's modern-day slavery and it's on the rise. I found this excellent article on the topic with important facts and statistics: What is Human Trafficking?

a wonderful nonprofit organization called

"We've rescued hundreds of children enslaved around the world, helped keep hundreds more from entering the sex-trade through our various prevention programs, ensured justice for those that have been wronged and have raised awareness to untold numbers. And, we'll continue to expand to help reach even more children in the days ahead!"

It's hard to believe that human trafficking goes on like this! Thanks for sharing such helpful information and have a super weekend!

Thanks for visiting! Yes, I hope there will be greater pressure by governments to combat this evil, but there are non-profits who are making a difference too. They say drug dealers are turning to human trafficking because it's less risky and that shouldn't be the case! I enjoyed your funny memes this week. Enjoy today's game, or at least the food!

That's so crazy that drug dealers are turning to human trafficking like that! We just watched an episode of The Mentalist that dealt with this issue, and it made me think of your recent post, too. Thanks for saying hey again!
It's so frightening to realise that it's happening on such a huge scale! I'm definitely going to check out that article x #fridayfrivolity

This is a great reminder about human trafficking. I have a close friend in OH who has a non-profit helping women who have been trafficked or caught in prostitution called Rahab Ministries. I worked as a clinical counselor for 25 years so I have known a fair amount about trauma and its effects, but this area of abuse (trafficking) is so insidious and evil. Thanks for bring this to everyone's attention! Visiting today as your neighbor at #Friendship Friday Blog Party.
Blessings on your day!

Thanks for visiting, Pam! I wish all the best with being a co-author. I think that sounds fabulous, although I'm sure it will have its challenges too. Yes, God tells the best stories. I'm going to be sharing about Jeremiah's life, especially the latter part of his life, at our fellowship this morning. My topic is "God's Leading Does Not Mean Plain Sailing." Wishing you a blessed Sunday!

I've heard about human trafficking, but I had no ideas that the figures/statistics were so high! It's unreal; I can't fathom treating another human being like that.
I'm hoping that number is for rare cases, but once is bad enough. It's scary and I think it would kill the person/child. :(
Yes, we need to pray and, if we can, we should support those who are doing something about it. Thanks for visiting and getting the word out so that more people can decide to do something about it. God bless!

Human trafficking is a huge problem. Living here in the SF Bay Area, I know that many groups including the local authorities are doing much to stop it.

Thanks, Patrick. I'm glad they are. I also didn't want to rain on the parade (festivities), so I was careful to include more light-hearted stuff as well. I just saw your cool Super Bowl City pics and it looks like you are having great fun. Enjoy the games!

That's good to hear! I support them by sharing about them on my blog, it's not the first time, and I often like and share their Facebook posts on my timeline. If you can do more than that, then that's great! Happy Valentine's Day!
