Christmas and New Year's Eve with a Linky

We spent our Christmas and New Year's Eve at my in-laws' beach house. My daughters surprised their grandparents by decorating the fruitcake that my mother-in-law baked to look like their miniature Schnauzer, Ziggy. The girls are so creative! The only person missing from the festivities was our son, Jeremiah. We decided to take Christmas to him. We had a picnic with him outside of his tiny studio apartment. My mother-in-law organized most of it.

Do you have a special Christmas Eve or Christmas Day tradition? My mother-in-law has one that I think is unique to her. Every year she uses a tumbleweed for her Christmas tree. She decorates it instead of a fir tree because we are in South Africa and it's more natural to our environment. You can see the tumbleweed in the photo below.

Do you open all of your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning? We always open one present each on Christmas Eve and then the rest on Christmas morning. As far as traditions go, it's not that unusual. Lots of people do so for different reasons. My parents decided to let my brother and me open one present on Christmas Eve because of our mixed roots and I have kept that tradition. My mom was born in Brazil to a Brazilian mother and an Austrian father. Later my grandmother remarried a German man. A few of my cousins are Swiss. I spent many Christmases in Germany with my grandparents and a few in Switzerland with my cousins. Brazil, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland (along with several other countries) open all of their presents on Christmas Eve. My parents are both Americans, so opening presents on Christmas morning was our tradition. My South African husband was also raised with Christmas morning being the day.

Did you know that in Iceland they open all of their presents on Christmas Eve and the best Christmas gift is a book? I love the Icelandic tradition of gifting books on Christmas Eve. I don't need much of an excuse to spend the night reading. It's called the Christmas Book Flood. You can read more about it here.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We are presently on South Africa's West Coast enjoying the sun, sand, and sea. It's actually the cold Atlantic Ocean. I don't even go into the water, but I love taking photos of it. A highlight was seeing two people horseback riding on the beach. I'm including the individual pics below.

This is my final post for the year. I'm leaving the blog hop open until the last day of December. I hope that you will end 2020 well and that 2021 will be blessed. See you next year!

Happy New Year 2019 and a Linky!

Happy New Year 2019!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with friends and family. We visited my in-laws on South Africa's West Coast for 10 days. Here are some family pics and a few Christmas decorations, including two wire-beaded sheep parading as reindeer! The sheep were at the neighbor's house. Amanda helped her grandma make the beach themed Christmas wreath a couple of years ago and it still looks good. The cat and dog belong to my in-laws.

I've decided that my Picture Perfect Party Linky will now run from Tuesday to Tuesday and I will no longer host the Make My Saturday Sweet weekend blog hop. Please feel free to link any family friendly post below!

RIP Benny!

We have some sad news! Our dear family dog, named Benny, passed away two days ago. We had a kind family looking after our pets while we were at my in-laws' beach house. They came in twice a day to feed the dogs and cats and to take the dogs for a walk. The mother walked Benny who was going slowly the last couple of days while her husband and their young son took Koda on a bigger walk. The family also made use of our pool, so the dogs got more attention than just a couple of walks a day. (It's summertime in South Africa, in case you're wondering.) Thankfully, Benny never showed any signs of illness. It was just his time to go. He was 14 years old and died in his sleep. We adopted him from an animal shelter as a puppy and was a big part of our lives.
