Our Review:

Amanda (age 12) received Indescribable as a gift from her grandma a couple of years ago. It became a well-loved book that she has read about 4 times.

Amanda keeps the book by her bed. She likes that every new chapter is a new topic about natural science and God. She has learned a lot and thinks it’s very interesting.

I like the way the book is laid out with text and illustrations. It’s easy to follow with cool facts for kids. Louie Giglio helps kids to see God in science and makes learning fun.

Fun Math Games and a Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -

Amanda was given a free grade 2 online math game to try out using three-digit numbers. The game she played is Number Holdem 2.

"Bet your bones while building three-digit numbers with this comparing game! Kids will love Floyd and all of the characters in Education.com's collection of interactive math games."

She breezed through it quickly, but told me that other kids in her grade 3 class still struggle with this concept. She recommends the game for kids. You can find this game and many more free games like it at Education.com.

Energy Saving Graph with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #218!

Do You Use Free Online Education for Your Kids?

It's been a while since I accessed free online educational sites for Amanda. Then, about a month ago, I heard of an excellent online educational site for kids called Education.com. It has different activities for Math and Reading from Pre-K to Grade 5. There is a free membership option and a couple of paid options, which are explained on the Description and Pricing page.

Amanda's favorite subject at school is Math. Education.com has colorful games and coloring multiplication worksheets to teach math in an engaging, low-stress manner that generates excitement. Check out the Math Resources page and see for yourself!

I was given a free activity to try at home with Amanda. It's a Household Energy Consumption Activity for Grade 3 that teaches Math using Data Collecting, Multiplication, and Graphing.

Here's the introduction that grabbed my attention:

Chances are, you find yourself saying it to your kids all the time: "Turn off the lights!" As energy costs rise and households continue to look for more ways to cut back, why not involve your third grader, too? Here's an activity that gives your third grader a chance to pull out her addition and multiplication skills to help your whole family take a good look at what those lights really do use up. Then, challenge your third grader to use the data to create bar graphs. What does it take to make those numbers go down?

The activity had guidelines and steps to follow, but seemed to be missing some nuts and bolts. I had to do research online to find out some necessary information. I also decided to change the activity to suit us better. You can follow our version below.

This blog is best viewed in Google Chrome.

What is a Watt?

A Kilowatt Hour (kWh) is a unit for measuring energy. This is what you pay for when you buy energy from the local utility company. It is, as its name suggests, one kilowatt of power used over a period of one hour. A light bulb is typically 60 watts; leave it on for an hour and you have used 60 watt hours, or .06 kWh. Source: Blog Homebug

To explain this concept to Amanda, I compared the idea of measuring energy to a ruler for measuring length. Amanda took the example further and compared it to a clock measuring time. Now she knows that we can measure energy too!

We are no longer using the standard 60 Watt bulbs in our house. South Africans have changed over to the energy saving 11 Watt bulbs. Amanda went around the house counting all of our lights and then we did the comparisons. I let her work out the math with a calculator when she needed one and I asked her word sum questions, so that she had to think the steps through herself.

The cost of electricity in our activity is in South African rands. You can go online and find out what it costs in your area.

This is what we concluded:

60 Watt Light Bulb
4 hours a day
30 cents a day
22 light bulbs about R7 a day
22 light bulbs about R50 a week

11 Watt Light Bulb
4 hours a day
.06 cents a day
22 light bulbs about R1.50 a day
22 light bulbs about R10 a week

How much money do we save a week?
R40

In the graph we used centimeters. Our biggest number was R50 a week, so we measured 25cm as our longest line (every half a cm equals R1). Hubby helped us with the graph. Overall, it was a good learning experience for all of us.

Disclosure: I was given the free activity, which is free for everyone, and this is my honest opinion.

Baking and Counting

Amanda loves helping me in the kitchen, especially when I’m baking, because there are things that she can safely do. The other day we made pancakes together. (I know, technically it’s not baking, since we use a frying pan.) Her job was to add in the ingredients once I’d measured them and then to help me mix it all together.

The recipe that I used is from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book. My mom brought the cook book with her from the States some years back and I’ve used it more than any of my other cook books. I usually like making the buttermilk pancakes, but when I don’t have buttermilk in the fridge then I just make the regular milk pancakes.

Since I have a big family, I tripled the recipe. Tripling the recipe meant that we got to add more of everything, which meant more fun for Amanda. I had her count the quantities as we added them to the bowl. When we got to the sugar, I used a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon, which meant that she would have to count that much higher.

I can tell that Amanda is getting more confident with her numbers and simple math. The other day she asked for two slices of avocado on toast. (We mash them up and add a bit of freshly squeezed lemon juice with salt and pepper to taste, but leave the pepper off for Amanda.) I didn’t think she’d finish two, so I tried to make one slice look like more by cutting it into four squares. I was unable to trick her. She said, “Mom, that’s not two slices. You cut one slice into four!”

Having Fun with Pinterest – 3

A few weeks ago I re-pinned a pin via Stephanie Welsh on Pinterest. Her recipe is called Busy Mom Puffins (Pancake Muffins). I’ve added the photo along with the recipe below.

Whenever I’m baking, Amanda loves to get involved. She likes to throw in the ingredients and helps me mix. This time we also did some counting together. I gave Amanda slices of bananas and blueberries to add to our puffins and she had to count how many she put in each one. We had a lot of fun and the recipe is so easy. I’m sure I’ll be making it again in the future.
Busy Mom Puffins (Pancake Muffins) Preheat oven to 350, mix 1 c pancake mix, 2/3 c water, 1/2 c syrup. Mix together, pour in greased muffin pan. Top with banana, blueberries, chocolate chips, pecans, sausage, bacon....etc. Bake for 12-14 minutes and serve. Easy, fast, delicious & no syrupy mess!!

Measuring Up – 2

I asked a question in my previous post “Does your child measure up?” Now, I would like to rephrase that question and ask, “Do you measure your child against other children and for what purpose?”

My son, Jeremiah, is my first child. He took his first unaided steps at 9 months of age, which is really young. This happened soon after watching his 3rd cousin, who was 6 months older, walking. (I searched on Google to find out exactly how they were related.) However, sometimes he would wet his bed up until around 6 years of age. He played hard all day and slept deeply at night, so deeply that he couldn’t wake himself up when he needed to urinate, not even when we took him ourselves. Was something wrong with him? No, and he eventually outgrew this problem. Some things just take time and don’t need medical attention or parental pressure.

The same morning that I pondered on this topic, I began to read the 1st book of a trilogy that my daughter, Samantha, borrowed from the library. The book is called, The Wind Singer, by William Nicholson and is the 1st of the Wind on Fire trilogy. I haven’t been able to put these books down. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that the theme in The Wind Singer is about the lie behind measuring people by using exams on certain subjects. The people in the story are living inside a large city and are tested every year to prove their intelligence and their worth from as early as 2 years of age. (By the way, these books are not for sensitive readers as the author doesn’t sugarcoat his storytelling, although I do recommend them.)

My thoughts on this subject are best expressed through an encounter I had with a near stranger. Earlier this year, we had a visitor whom we hardly knew. For some reason I was talking with our guest about the education system. I told him how school systems are only able to measure certain types of intelligences, like mathematics and language, but how there are many children sitting inside these schools who might be good in other areas. As an example, I suggested that a child who is good at gardening would not be recognized in his or her area of intelligence. Our guest then told me that his son struggled in school, but was now happy as an adult doing landscaping.

I hadn’t known this about his son before the conversation, but I don’t believe the example I gave was a coincidence. I believe the Holy Spirit was speaking through me even though I wasn’t aware of the significance of my words until he shared his own son’s experience. If you would like to read more about the Holy Spirit then you can start by reading my post in my blog, Happy Moms, Happy Homes called “Discovering Your Potential – Part 3 of 5.”
