Family Movie Night and a Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #223!

Do you have a regular family movie night at your home? We are a family of six and two of our kids are both young adults, so it's not always easy to get us all together. One of my favorite ways to spend an evening together is with a movie. I remember when our son was younger, we watched the Star Wars movies with him and his sisters. That was before Amanda was born.

Our latest movie night was on Mother's Day. We rented the animated movie Ballerina. My husband was the only guy in the room with our son away at university, but he enjoyed it along with our daughters and me.

I have created a list of family friendly movies along with the essentials to making a great movie night. Of course, it's the people you spend your evening with that makes the memories. We've seen two of the movies above, The Ultimate Gift and Veggie Tales: Lyle the Kindly Viking. The one that we haven't watched is Anything is Possible. It's one that I'd be interested in seeing. You can find these movies along with thousands of more titles of faith and family originals, movies, TV and shorts on Pure Flix.

Make My Saturday Sweet - Blog Hop #39

Today I'm linking with two other blog hops.

My favorite movie of all time is…

This story moved me in a way that many movies never did. I was in my teens when it came out in 1991. It was based on the memoir of Sonora Webster Carver called, A Girl and Five Brave Horses. She was a rider of diving horses who later went blind after one of her dives.

Sonora’s story shows the courage of an orphan girl during the Great Depression. She was living with her aunt, who did not love her, and later ran away after being told that she would be sent to the orphanage the following day. She strikes out alone in the world and follows her heart.

Even after she becomes permanently blind from one of her dives, she finds a way to ride again and continues diving with horses for another 11 years.

It’s a truly beautiful story.

We played "The Wedding" by Michael Card
at the signing of the registry.
We got married in a little thatched-roof
church of red brick and stained-glass
windows. It was like a fairy tale!

You can watch and listen on this
YouTube clip.

When to Say "Yes" or "No" to TV Programs

The book Amanda is reading is called Who Lives Here?
It's a pop-up book published by Playmore and Waldman.

The other night Amanda said the silliest thing to me. “I’m going to get full of fire and I’m going to destroy the bad guys!” She demonstrated this by shooting her arms out in front of her and curling her fingers like claws. Obviously, she’s been watching too many of her brother and sisters’ TV programs. Secretly, I was impressed that she had used the word “destroy.”

When I had the three bigger kids, I was very strict with what they were allowed to watch even when it came to cartoons. Our youngest at the time was Samantha. She was more sensitive when it came to certain programs than Amanda is. I think it has to do with Samantha’s personality more than with my protectiveness, although I’m sure people will argue it the other way. Whatever the case, I’m less strict about what Amanda watches. Her siblings are that much older than her and I can’t tell them not to watch programs that relate to their age just because she’s there.

The previous weekend, however, I didn’t let Amanda watch the family-friendly movie that her three older siblings were watching. The movie was Nancy Drew. It has a so-called haunted house in the story and Amanda is still too young to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction. I didn’t want her to get scared or have bad dreams, so I put her to bed early and let her look at books instead. (She still corrects me and tells me that she’s “reading” and not “looking.”)

As a parent, it's very important that you decide what your child may or may not watch. Each child is different, so the line you draw must be fitting for that child. As the child grows and matures, that line must also be adjusted.
