The War on Drugs and Weekend #Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #186!

Today's topic is on a serious note. This morning I was shocked to hear how people are being killed in the Philippines for using or selling drugs. I know that illegal drugs, drug addiction, and dealing drugs are a huge problem. What is scary is to think that almost 2,000 people have already died in just seven short weeks for being involved with drugs in some way or another. Nearly 700,000 users and peddlers have turned themselves in to the police because they fear for their lives. To find out more, read the BBC News article, Philippines War on Drugs.

On Sunday I will be preaching at RAEL, the drug rehab where my husband has been going twice a week to pray, teach, and encourage the recovering addicts there. Every time Hubby visits, he is blessed by the positive interaction he has with the guys. To find out more about RAEL, visit my blog post, Addiction Recovery Farm.

My eldest daughter recently saw a TED Talk on drugs and she shared it with us this evening. It was extremely interesting and enlightening. Everyone should watch this video!

"What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem."

My son James at about 13 started out self medicating with marijuana and became addicted, he found that it calmed him down, things got worse when a doctor diagnosed him with ADD and prescribed medication and told him he could not use drugs or marijuana, but he did not listen. He had a reaction and became paranoid and bipolar. He battled all his life and after working with many doctors found the right combination of meds and at the pillar of being able to be on his own, have his son live with him, something still went terribly wrong and we lost him to suicide. Drugs are a horrible thing and getting worse. I shared your post today so others could listen to Johann Hari

Be blessed Christina, have a beautiful weekend.

What a terribly sad story! The wife who helped co-found RAEL says that her own childhood home was very loving and supportive, but she still became an addict. Thankfully, she is clean and her husband too. He lost everything during his drug and alcohol addiction. Thanks for sharing. Take care and God bless!

Wow! What an interesting take on addiction and it makes perfect sense to me. We are a family who has experienced addiction and it is true that finding others to connect with brings healing. God said to confess your faults to one another that you may be healed. I strongly believe that healing comes through community.
Thank you for this today.

Thanks, Pati! At RAEL (Recovering Addicts, Empowering Lives), they also point out that we need Jesus too. I'm so glad that my husband can regularly share God's Word there and that Jesus is embraced in the healing process. I checked out your post and you did a great job with those ruffled slipcovers. Very pretty!

Thanks for the link-up Amanda. Have a blessed weekend.
Wow, I hadn't heard of what was going on in the Philippines - thanks for enlightening me!

Yes, it's so tragic! Civilians are also getting paid to shoot people. It's scary. On a lighter note, while you're saying goodbye to Summer, we're having Spring - signs of Summer on it's way! I checked out your 5 After 5. Have you seen the camping meme? Camping is an expensive way to live like the homeless. LOL :D

Wow. That's just crazy, Christina! Lots of prayers need to be sent to that area, for sure! Hahaha on that camping meme - that's hilarious! Have fun welcoming summer down there and thanks so much for taking the time to say hey today!
Very interesting and very powerful.

I grew up in a home that was ravaged by addiction issues. I have sensed learned that I my parental unit was bi-polar and had many voids in her life.

I really think that people start their addiction to whatever it is and it makes them feel good and releases the dopamine in the brain and they crave it more.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that! When you are young, you can't distant yourself / protect yourself from people who bring you down. That is one thing I appreciate about adulthood. I have more power over my life now then I did as a child. I wish you all the best and healing of painful memories. God bless!

Always have a worry about my own nieces and nephews of somehow falling in with the wrong crowd. Ever vigilant. Thank you for your story. Such a cruel addiction for families to endure.
