Amanda and Samantha
Today's photos are of the 12th Grade Art Exhibit that showcased their work over the last two years. One of Samantha's elective subjects is Visual Arts. She has one final art theory exam left for the school year and then she'll be finished with art. 12th Grade is nearly over!

Parade Day and Graduation with a Linky

It was Samantha's Parade Day and High School Graduation last Friday. Parade Day is a unique tradition at her high school for the Grade 12's. The photos above are of her with her best friends. (She's on the left in the first pic and on the right in the second.) She still has final exams to write, but she's finished with her schooling. High School in South Africa begins in Grade 8, so she's been there for the past 4 years of her life. Both guys and girls shed tears in the school hall at the final ceremony as a big part of their lives comes to an end.

No one received a certificate of graduation, because the final exams are only just underway. The students will collect their diplomas from the school office in the new year. University will also start in the new year, so that's why some things are a bit back to front. Samantha's already been provisionally accepted at Stellenbosch University and has been allocated a room in a res that she will share with another girl.

My Second Chance

About the Book:

Title: My Second Chance | Author: Judy Corry | Pages: 283 | Genre: Romance/Drama | Theme: Teen Pregnancy | Recommended Age: Young Adult

Book Description:

They broke the rules. He broke her heart. Does their love deserve a second chance?

Sixteen-year-old Juliette Cardini has been keeping a secret for months. Before she went to her semester abroad in Paris, she dated her best friend's older brother, Easton Stevens. What had started as a whirlwind romance filled with forbidden meetings, came to a crashing halt when they crossed a line together that neither of them could return from.

Now she's back in Ridgewater and has to face everyone she left behind. But there's one more secret she is afraid for anyone to discover. She's pregnant. And Easton is the father.

But she has a plan: go to her grandma's house for the next few months. Keep the baby a secret. No one will ever have to know. But when Juliette sees signs that Easton might want a second chance, she wonders if keeping everything to herself is the best choice.

Can a relationship built on such a rocky foundation have a chance at a happy ending? And what will Easton do if Juliette's secret comes out?

MY SECOND CHANCE is a standalone novel in The Ridgewater High series, a collection of simmering YA contemporary romances. If you like sweet romance with ballad-worthy chemistry, swoony kisses and endearing characters then you'll love Judy Corry's latest book.

This is a clean romance with a positive message.

Purchase on Amazon:

My Review:

My Second Chance is a nitty-gritty novel about a teen's unplanned pregnancy. 16-year-old Juliette has been keeping her secret for months, but a secret that life-altering requires a string of lies. Now she has to deal with all the consequences. Relationships are challenged, including her best friend and ex-boyfriend. Her mother is supportive in her own way, but hardly ever around. Juliette is constantly having to make adult decisions when she is still a kid herself. Because life is messy, things don't always go as planned.

This story deals with real teenage issues. This is not a straightforward HEA. The author explores every possible outcome and leaves the reader guessing until the end.

The writing style flowed so naturally that I felt the girl's anxiety. It could have been me in the story, that's how real it felt! This heartfelt story should be mandatory reading for all teenagers.

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Kindle | Paperback

My Review:

Starfire has it all - a story that many young adult readers will enjoy! It has adventure, romance, magic, aliens, and more! The story moves quickly with interesting characters and a well-developed plot. The romance happens a bit too quickly for my taste, but there's nothing beyond kissing. Since this is the first book in a series, it doesn't have a proper ending. You'll have to stick around to find out what happens next!

The Verdo

The Verdo
by Kimberly J. Smith

About the Book:

Title: The Verdo | Author: Kimberly J. Smith | Publisher: Lulu.com | Pages: 203 | Genre: Paranormal and Urban Fantasy | Recommended Age: Young Adult

Book Description:

Death is so boring. At least that's how fifteen-year-old Callie finds being stuck "in between," until the day she discovers someone has left a newborn baby in the old gypsy wagon (or "verdo" as it's also called) in Wailing Woods. Determined to save the child, she tracks down Laney, the girl who barely survived the same car wreck that took Callie's life three years earlier (and whose mother's recklessness caused the accident in the first place). A mysterious connection between the two girls allows Callie to lead Laney into the spooky forest to save the baby. Laney hopes the newborn will finally help her family heal, but when Callie's grieving parents end up with custody, emotional wounds are deepened. Callie pieces together the mystery connecting the baby, the fleeting psychic powers Laney has had since the accident, and the too-good-to-be-true new guy in town. Could there be a reason Callie hasn't moved on to whatever comes next? Could she be the only one capable of putting things right?

My Review:

Death is final, but what if you were given the chance to put some things right? Kimberly J. Smith explores this idea in her paranormal and urban fantasy book about a teenager who unexpectedly dies in a car crash. Her name is Callie and she finds herself stuck on earth as a ghost. For a few years, she never bumps into other ghosts and people can't see or hear her. It can get lonely and boring not having anyone to talk to. But things start to change when she hears a newborn baby crying from the verdo, an old gypsy wagon in Wailing Woods.

The Verdo is a great read for teenagers and young adults. The story flows smoothly from character to character. There's mystery around the baby's birth mother and the family that has just moved to town. There's conflict between families and suspense that isn't too dark and scary. One of the underlying messages in the story is the importance of appreciating our families. Another message is that people of different races and backgrounds should all be treated with equal respect.

About the Author
Kimberly J. Smith

Kimberly J. Smith is an advertising creative director with twenty-five years of experience telling brand stories for companies both large and small. Her passion for storytelling extends into children’s literature where she loves to tell tales that are a bit more fantastical. A voracious reader, her favorite stories (both to read and to write) tend to revolve around those that put a magical twist on familiar legends to reveal the imaginary hidden within the folds of reality. Her middle grade books THE DRAGON WHISTLER and SYDNEY WAKEFIELD: INTO THE FARAWAY definitely fall into that category. WAILING WOODS, a young YA paranormal, releases later this year. Her current project is an alternative reality novel for teens called THE SUMMONER’S REBELLION.

My Review:

I always enjoy a good love story that makes me smile. This is one of those stories. It's a sweet coming of age novella. Brooke is a 16-year-old girl who recently moved with her mother and started attending a new school not far from her old one. Her parents are separated and seeking counselling. Brooke feels betrayed by her father and doesn't trust boys, especially not self-confident Luke.

Meet Your Match is a quick read with enough things going wrong in the young love department to keep it interesting. The characters are also personable. I recommend it for ages 12 and up.

Current books in the series:

Meet Your Match
Miss Match
Not Your Match
Mix 'N Match
