On Lockdown with Dogs and a Linky

Robbie, Jessica, and Amanda
with Koda and Biscuit

South Africa is on a 21-day lockdown and, for the most part, no one is allowed to leave their properties. This means our dogs are no longer able to go for their usual run, but they seem to be enjoying the extra attention that we’re giving them.

We adopted both adult dogs from different animal shelters. We’ve had Koda longer than Biscuit. The dogs have to be watched around our cats, especially Biscuit, because she has killed a cat before out in the bushveld. Even today, she went for Prince, but came up short because of her leash. I’ll share photos of our cats next time.

Jessica Begins University with Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #209!

We have had such a busy day getting Jessica registered for university and getting her accommodation organized. Some of the South African universities are still struggling to get back on track after the riots from last year. At Jessica's university, the administration building was burned down. The university also shut down early before the end of the year exams to protect the staff and students. This put everything behind schedule.

We never stopped inquiring about Jessica's online application, but we kept getting the same kind of response that we should not worry and we would eventually be contacted. In actuality, the online applications are a new thing and they still need to work out the kinks in the system. They have been running behind in getting students processed. In our case, important forms that Hubby submitted were missing. Thankfully, he spoke to enough people to finally get the ball rolling. It turns out her classes begin on Monday!

We could really see God helping us get over a bunch of hurdles to make it possible for her to move in on Sunday and be ready to start her classes on Monday. She is studying Accountancy with her goal to become a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) 😉. We had a lot of friends and family praying and we are thankful for that!

Now we will have two kids at university! Jeremiah is in his third year at Rhodes in Grahamstown. It's about a twelve hour bus ride as long as there are no delays. He's studying Information Systems (IS) and Sociology. Jessica's university is only an hour's drive away. This was her choice, but we're quite happy about it.

Jeremiah and Jessica with Timmy the Cat

Jessica with Tammy the Cat

The photos I'm sharing were all taken at my in-laws' beach house during our December holiday. Jessica adored the cats when they were little kittens. She was a little girl herself, at the time, and spent hours playing with them. Both cats are now old. Tammy is at the vet tonight and on a drip. Please keep the old girl in prayer. And Timmy, we've been told, has the sniffles.

3 Funny English Learning Videos and a Graduation at Leipzig

3 Funny English Learning Videos,
a YWAM English Language
School Graduation, and
a Weekend Blog Hop

The English Language School at YWAM Worcester, South Africa, offers English classes from levels 1 - 5 to foreign language students from around the world. Every school term (about 11 weeks long), the students graduate a level if they are proficient enough. They learn grammar, listening, and pronunciation. This last term I was one of the listening and pronunciation teachers. The graduation was held at the beautiful Leipzig Country House.

Institute for the Blind

I introduced this 2-part series last Friday.
If you missed it, then I recommend
that you read Part 1 first.

Institute for the Blind - Part 1

Institute for the Blind - Part 2

The Institute for the Blind in Worcester, South Africa, offers a safe haven for the visually impaired, multi-disabled and deaf-blind adults. There are a variety of skills that are taught and each individual is given the opportunity to lead a meaningful life to the capacity that he/she is able.

A big part of the skills training include the six production units: the Mattress Department, the Woodworking Department, the Weaving Department, the Cane Department, the Creative Projects Department, and the Metal Department. Here, the adult residents at the Blind Institute create beautiful, high-quality products. Having fulfilling jobs allow them to lead meaningful lives. They also take pride in knowing that they are able to make a vital contribution to the country's working sector.

skills training she has received in
Marketing, as a Call Center Agent,

and in Telephony.

(the Executive Head) -

and new coffee "Blindiana Blend"

Joseph - South Africa's first blind barista

Freddie Botha explains the new name
for the Institute for the Blind, Worcester:
Kaleidoscope - Let the blind lead.

"Life is like an ever shifting kaleidoscope; a slight change and all patterns alter." - Sharon Salzberg

"The idea behind a kaleidoscope is that it's a structure that's filled with broken bits and pieces, and somehow if you can look through them, you still see something beautiful. And I feel that we are all that way a little bit." - Sara Bareiles

All the guests were served
an Italian style lunch and
delicious desserts afterwards.
