Reduce Reuse Recycle this Christmas with Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #200!

Christmas is an especially good time to remember the three R's, because there is so much waste during the season. We can reduce, by buying less and more thoughtfully. We can reuse by re-gifting or saving bags, ribbons, and cards to use again. We can recycle by sorting our trash and disposing of it appropriately.

Here is an excellent resource:

Our family does recycling faithfully throughout the year. Our trash is mostly paper, plastic, tins, and glass, so it makes a lot of sense to recycle. In the USA, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, household waste increases by 25%.

I like to save Christmas bags, ribbons, and cards. They are always needed at Christmas time and often look good from one year to the next. The Christmas bags usually only need a new gift tag. The ribbons are used to decorate gifts, of course, or cards. The old cards get cut up and glued on new blank cards with a white page glued inside. This is where I can get a little creative and if the kids get involved they can have some fun too. Below are three that I did this December.

Between recycling and composting, we probably only put out the trash to be picked up once every two months and even then, it's not full! We also save gift bags, boxes, bows and tissue paper and there are some gift bags that I specifically love and put my parents gifts in each year, because I know they'll use them again for our gifts the next. When I was wrapping presents the other day, I realized I've been using one of the gift bags since 1988 - because it help an especially fantastic gift, so I remember that gift and bag well!

We were just so shocked when we started composting and saw even more of a difference in our trash output than when our area started its recycling program.
THis is a great reminder to not waste! I recycle year round. So, of course I'll do it during Christmas. I reuse bags too. And stopped sending paper cards. And quit buying bows!

Glad to hear!
I just visited your post. My youngest and I went through all her grade 2 workbooks from the year and did a paper purgathon too with a large pile of paper for recycling. It's amazing how much work a kid does at school! The kids now have summer holiday and it's the end of a school year in South Africa. The new school year begins January 11. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for making us conscious of the environment during this season of rampant consumption!

My mother always reused the paper. There was one particular Christmas paper that she reused until it became a Christmas tag!
I always save and reuse the bags from year to year. My husband and son know by now just to take the gift out and hand me the bag to fold it up :)

My mother-in-law has even gone so far as to not write on the gift bag's tag and has used her own, so the kids know who's gift it is and that way I can keep the bags to reuse like new. At least I think she does it for me. Or maybe she just likes using her own tags. ;)

My mom was an inveterate wrapping supply-saver. She would carefully save every ribbon and tag and bag as we opened presents. When she passed away earlier this year, I couldn't bear to throw away what she had so carefully saved, so I'm using her stash this year on my presents. It has been very sweet to think of her and her example of stewardship as I wrap presents for other loved ones.

That is very special and so sad too. Thanks for sharing! Wishing you a blessed Christmas.
