Adopt a Pet with Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #201!

If you are considering giving a dog or cat a loving home this holiday season, then please consider adopting before shopping. Also, consider when it will be good to introduce the pet to a new environment. Christmas morning might not be the best time for your new pet as it can be a loud and busy time for family members. Some shelters even experience an increase in unwanted puppies just after the holidays, because some people give a puppy as a Christmas gift without taking into account all the different factors that come with such a gift.

When considering adopting, don't rush into it. All the dogs and cats at a shelter need a home, but not all of them are a good fit for you and your home set-up. We have adopted both of our dogs from local shelters and one of our cats, but we've also owned three other dogs in the past that were problem dogs. Neither my husband nor I have the skills or patience to cope with problem dogs. We've been really fortunate, though, with our two shelter dogs and others have also told us that they are wonderful. We adopted the black one as a puppy and the German Shepherd mix as an adult. There are pros to adopting an adult pet and you can read about them on my post, Adopting an Adult Pet.

We adopted a super sick kitten for my daughters birthday. It took a LOT of work and a lot of money but he is now healthy and the sweetest thing ever.

I hope the shelter warned you first. That is a big task. I'm glad it worked out and that you guys are enjoying him!

Yay for successful pet adoptions! We adopted a dog last year through a local rescue group and it was an intense process - almost more involved than adopting a child! We had the dog for a month and in that time, he bit our daughter twice (completely unprovoked), so, sadly, we had to return him to the group. They had thought he would be fine with a young child and he seemed to be, but turned out to need a home without kids. Hope you have a super weekend!

How disturbing! :( I think the shelter also has a responsibility to adoptive families to make sure first.
Also, some shelters make it very difficult to adopt, but others are more helpful. Thanks for sharing and thanks for hosting the Friday Frivolity! Take care and God bless!

It was just such a sad ordeal to go through (thankfully our Gv wasn't hurt seriously or become nervous around all dogs as a result!)
Shelter pets are the way to go I think. I love the photo of Amanda sitting next to the dog..she looks so little next to him.
Thanks for hosting!!

Both dogs are very gentle, but Koda, the big one, is very boisterous and chases cats, which is a big "No, no". We keep him away from our cats and if he is in the house, then he's under strict surveillance. We tried really hard to train him, but he just won't leave the cats alone unless he's been told to lie down and we watch him to make sure he doesn't move. And, he knows when we're not watching! LOL :D
Thanks for hosting your blog party and for tweeting about mine and others!
Wishing you a blessed Christmas.

Thanks, Michele! Your quote in your post is a new favorite of mine: “If community is the heartbeat of the gospel, hospitality is the hand that opens the door and waves it in.” Thanks for sharing! God bless.

What a great way to think through an important decision!
This is my first time joining this blog hop (and any hop for that matter), so I hope I did it correctly. I actually visiting 2 ahead of mine (although I don't see mine listed) because of the placement of it!
Happy Saturday!

Hi Jodie! Thanks for visiting and linking! Yes, you did it right. I checked the link and it works! Sometimes the link doesn't show up right away. I always reload the page whenever I link a post of mine in the linky. :) Also, some people like to type in their blog name instead of the title of their post. It's entirely up to you! I'm now following you on Twitter. Wishing you a blessed Christmas!
