3 Picture Books by Patricia Furstenberg

Tea-Party with Animal Friends from Books
by Patricia Furstenberg

Ana lives in the “Rainbow Country.” Grown-ups and Teachers call it the ‘Rainbow Nation,” but Ana likes to think she lives under a rainbow. Not that it rains a lot, actually most days are sunny here and she loves it. You can have a picnic any day and not worry about the weather!

Last night she worried. “Do you think it will be sunny tomorrow, Ma’?” she asked at bedtime half knowing it will be, half longing for her mother’s confirmation. Whenever Ma' said “yes” it meant yes and that was good to know!

“Yes, all sunny weather for your picnic, Ana,” smiled Mom bending to tug her in. Her hair was soft as it brushed Ana’s cheek and it smelled sweet… like Ma'. “Will they ALL be coming?” Mom’s eyebrows went up, a little worried.

There was a party scheduled for tomorrow, a picnic in their garden, and Ana invited ALL her animal friends. The ones that live in books. You didn’t think she would invite REAL ones, would you? Ana lives in South Africa. Would you invite a real lion to your picnic? I didn’t think so… There would be nothing left to eat for the rest of the party!

Ana picked up her guest list. “Winnie the Pooh and Friends,” were at the top of the list. How else, she grew up with “silly, old bear” and learned her grade 1 spelling with “T-I double G-ER.”

“Honey, cake and carrots,” checked Mom on her own list.

“Joyful Trouble,” smiled Ana. “Grandad will be happy to see him again!”

When her grandfather was a young sailor in Simon’s Town, long, long, long ago, during The Second World War, he was in charge with a fantastic dog, a huge dog, a friendly dog, Joyful Trouble the Great Dane. He was the first dog ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy! Ana had a stuffed dog looking exactly the same whom she lovingly called “Joyful Trouble.”

“Bones,” smiled Mom. “He’s always been an easy dog to please.”

“As long as he's not asking for fresh fish!” giggled Ana, remembering the story. Then, eyeing the smudge on Mom’s paper went on: “Paddington Bear!”

“Marmalade sandwich!” laughed Mom.

“Lion and Dog,” said Ana next, following her list and tapping it with a finger. Then she glanced over to Mom’s sheet. “Do we have enough meat? What if Lion is hungry?” Lion and Dog were Ana’s new friends from “The Lion and the Dog”, a story she enjoyed very much because it reminded her that size doesn’t matter when one makes new friends. She especially liked the last illustration where all the zoo animals gathered around the Christmas tree while children sang Christmas carols.

Mom didn't look worried, “he is a rather small lion, isn’t he? And he does chew an occasional bone… we have plenty of those! How many dogs are invited to your picnic?”

“Four!” laughed Ana. “Puppy is coming too and then there’s Dog, Cheetah’s best friend in the whole African plain!”

“Puppy is a sweet little fellow, we have milk but, knowing him, he’d like to taste a little bit of everything from the table!” Mom winked. They both enjoyed reading “Puppy, 12 Months of Rhymes and Smiles” at bedtime, one poem each night. It was fun to cuddle together and see how the little dog grew, one poem at a time. Ana enjoyed to find out what mischievous adventures Puppy happened to… fall into!

“What will we feed Cheetah, Ma?” Cheetah the cub befriended Dog in “The Cheetah and the Dog” proving that different souls can be friends even if they look different. People became so captivated by their unusual story that almost overnight “The Cheetah and the Dog” had been spun into an African folktale. Ana thought about the book illustration in which Cheetah and Dog shared a meal of steak and eggs cooked over a camp fire!

“I’ll make sure we have small bits of meat,” Mom pointed towards the bottom of her list where a big exclamation mark stood beside “meat!” “Anyone else?”

“Only The Elephant and the Sheep,” smiled Ana looking like a lamb herself. This was the third book in the collection and Ana had fallen in love with the gentle baby elephant and his friendly, yet curious lamb companion. Reading the book she was surprised to discover that an elephant calf can hold such a big secret. She loved the happy ending; it reminded her of her mom’s favorite song, “Imagine”. Just like the illustration depicting the two new friends enjoying a quiet African sunset together under the sparkling light of friendly stars.

“Grass for them and sleep for you!” said Mom as she kissed Ana good night.

“Ma’,” whispered Ana half asleep, “will you come to our picnic too?”

And Mom smiled just as the moon and the stars smiled in the sky. “Yes, I'll come," and Ana knew that she will.

About the Author:
Patricia Furstenberg

Patricia Furstenberg

Patricia Furstenberg came to writing though reading, her passion for books being something she inherited from her parents. She won two key legs (chapter six, "Someone is Missing" and chapter nine, "Reconstruction of the Crime") of the Write Your Own Christie Competition and was runner-up for chapter four. The Judges "were impressed by her thorough investigation and admired the strength of her narrative; they were impressed by her style" and congratulated Patricia on winning the penultimate chapter. "This was perhaps one of the hardest rounds of the competition and the judges felt that Patricia's chapter was confident and intriguing." The judges thought Patricia's writing style is "well structured, with a great sense of tension and suspense."

The Judges were Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie's grandchild involved in publishing and promoting her books since 1960s, David Brawn, Agatha Christie's Publisher at Harper Collins UK for the last 20 years and Daniel Mallory who works primarily with thrillers and crime fiction at Harper Collins US.

When she’s not writing Patricia likes to read, read, read, drink coffee and listen to music. One of the characters portrayed in her children stories is Pete, the yellow toy elephant. Not many know, but Pete exists and lives in Pat's home. This Romanian born writer is living happily with her husband, children and dogs in sunny South Africa.

Everyone Has a Mother Free eBook

Everyone Has a Mother
by Sally Huss

Children's Books: EVERYONE HAS A MOTHER (Fun, Adorable, Rhyming Bedtime Story/Picture Book, for Beginner Readers, Honoring Mothers of all Kinds, Including Animals, Ages 2-8) by [Huss, Sally]

About the Book:

Title: Everyone Has a Mother | Author and Illustrator: Sally Huss | Publisher: Huss Publishing | Pages: 38 | Ages: 2 - 8

Book Description:

From cats and dogs and birds and squirrels and goats and turtles to llamas, sheep, cows, chickens, bears and elephants, hippos, rhinos, even giraffes, frogs and fish – all have mothers.

Whimsical illustrations of animals, insects, reptiles, as well as people, bring home the message that everyone has a mother. The idea is amusingly stated in rhyme to delight any small child and honor any mother. Over 30 happy and colorful illustrations dance across the pages.

My Review:

Everyone Has a Mother is a sweet story about animals and their mothers. Amanda enjoyed how there were all kinds of animals, from giraffes that are tall, to fish that are small, to some having tails like whales, and how leopards have spots and ladybugs have polka dots. I liked the friendly colors and I enjoyed the bits that rhymed. I thought it was clever at the end to describe all the different kinds of human mothers from foster mothers to great-grandmothers. This is a cute picture book for young children.

About the Author:
Sally Huss

Sally Huss

"Bright and happy," "light and whimsical" have been the catch phrases attached to the writing and art of Sally Huss for over 30 years. Sweet images dance across all of Sally's creations, whether in the form of children's books, paintings, wallpaper, ceramics, baby bibs, greeting cards, purses, clothing, or her King Features Syndicated newspaper panel "Happy Musings."

Before graduating from USC with a degree in Fine Art in the 60's, Sally had already become a champion tennis player, having won the Wimbledon and U.S. Junior titles and been a Wimbledon semi-finalist in the Women's Division in both singles and doubles. Through her tennis connections she ended up working in television for Ralph Story, and then in film for Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. Eventually, she transitioned into running Paul Simon’s music publishing company, Charing Cross in Beverly Hills.

Keeping her hands on her tennis rackets, along with her brushes and pen, Sally operated in two arenas.

Through her work with dance therapist Joan Englander, Sally created a unique method of playing and teaching tennis based on relaxation. It was highly embraced by creative people of all kinds and her roster of students included: Larry Hagman, Joel Grey, Barbra Streisand, Jill St. John, Helen Reddy, Milos Forman, Jack Jones. She eventually wrote a book on this “Zen-like” approach published by Harcourt, Brace.

With her husband Marv Huss, former head of Advertising and Promotion for Hallmark Cards, they developed the renowned Aspen Club in Colorado, a luxury health spa and tennis facility, opening the club with a Battle of the Sexes match, pitting Sally against the self-proclaimed ultimate chauvinist Bobby Riggs. She was one of the first female head tennis club professionals in the U.S.

Returning to California in the 80’s, the Husses embarked on building a string of 26 Sally Huss Galleries across the country (also one in Switzerland and another in Tokyo) offering Sally's art, writings, and licensed products.

Through the galleries, Sally's creations have found their way into millions of offices, hotels, and homes, including those of Clint Eastwood, Kirk Douglas, Joel Gray, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Mitt Romney.

Sally has also been inducted into the Kern County Sports Hall of Fame and the Occidental College’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Presently the Husses reside in Solana Beach, California and Sally continues to play social and league tennis nearby at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Besides this, Sally indulges herself in her life-long passion of writing and illustrating her own books. Her collection of books now numbers over 80 and many have become top-sellers on Amazon. The majority of her books are for children, while others touch on her expertise as a tennis champion, and still others reveal her positive philosophy of life. Her creations are still "bright and happy, "light and whimsical" after all these years!

Here's a peek inside...

My Review

Bear with Bear is an unconventional picture book that is entertaining and nicely illustrated. Amanda and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's about a 9-year-old big brother named Bear who wants a pet. He doesn't want the usual kind of pet like a cat or dog. He wants critters or a snake instead!

His little sister, Penelope, struggles with nightmares and Bear isn't much help. His critters even cause a bit of chaos and he encourages the new kitty to behave like a wild cat. The parents have to try and find a way to bring a happy balance to the home.

The book is interactive. Some of the pages give you the opportunity to find out if this part of the story actually happened in the author's life. Amanda really liked this feature. There is also a link where you are invited to write and tell your story to the author.

We highly recommend this book for children ages 6 to 9.

Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon

Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon
by H.L. Burke

Title: Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon | Author: H.L. Burke | Illustrators: Mikayla Rayne and Jennifer White | Publication Date: March 1, 2015 | Pages: 112 | Recommended Ages: 9 - 12

About the Book

Thaddeus F. Whiskers is a pampered palace pet, a kitten enchanted to never become a cat. Princess Clarice loves him, for in the entire kingdom, there is no other kitten as cute or as clever. He leads a life of cushions and cream until a wizard's "gift" results in his banishment. Determined to make it back to the princess he loves, he escapes into the wilderness where he discovers the lair of a dragon.

Grandious, the dragon, doesn't care about anything besides himself. He wants to be left alone with his treasure. However, there is something about Thaddeus that has him entranced. He finds himself opening his home and his heart to the little cat.

Thaddeus is a small creature in a big world. Between him and his beloved Princess stand conniving wizards, would-be-step-mothers, and rampaging rats. However, when danger threatens both Clarice and Grandious, Thaddeus won't allow his size to get in the way of saving his friends.

**My Review**

When I heard that Heidi Lyn Burke was publishing a new novel, I couldn't wait to read it! Up until now, all of Heidi's fantasy novels I have read for my own pleasure and reviewed. Even my two teenage girls have enjoyed reading some of her stories. When I heard that this one was for children, I was keen to include Amanda in the review.

Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon is a middle-grade chapter book that will not only capture the imagination of children, but also the imagination of their parents and teachers. It's a great book to read-aloud at bedtime or in the classroomIt has all the elements of a fairy-tale with magic and wizards and a dragon. The story is mostly told from Thaddeus' point of view, the kitten who is also the princess' companion. Even though he is small, he has to learn how to overcome adversity and dangerous enemies.

In Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon, two unlikely creatures become the best of friends. They learn to respect each other and care for each other despite their differences. Indeed, they have some huge differences, like in their size - one is very small and one is very large, but they also have some similarities. Parents and teachers could use this as a discussion point with their children to celebrate the differences and similarities between races and cultures.

H.L. Burke is descriptive in her story-telling. Here's a quote from Chapter 6: "He emptied the sack upon the floor and smoothed the coins with his tail as if spreading butter on bread." I enjoy that kind of imagery.

It's also a great book for building your child's vocabulary. Here are just a few of the big words found in the first chapter alone: ungainliness, marveled, fawned, inhabitants, and procession.

My daughter, Amanda, loves a bit of mystery and suspense. When we got to the part where the Rat King wanted something from Thaddeus, she could hardly contain her excitement as we waited to find out in a later chapter what it was he wanted. She also enjoyed the funny twist at the end, especially the part with the baby rats. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll leave it at that!

I highly recommend this book for boys and girls ages 9 to 12 and anyone older who is young at heart!

Here's the link to the original post:

Goo and Spot in the Do Not Wiggle Riddle is a delightful bedtime story for girls and boys. I read it to Amanda last night. She is 7 years old and enjoyed the book thoroughly. Her favorite parts were the "Now keep your ears open and your mouth closed up tight..." and the answer to the riddle at the end of the story.

I really appreciated the idea of this book, to encourage kids to listen and think. It's a feel-good bedtime story and the fun rhyming makes it even better. I highly recommend it for boys and girls ages 7 and under.

I previously did a review for another delightful rhyming book of Elsa's. You can check out that review at A Moat is Not a Goat.

The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool

Book Review

The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool Cover

About the Book

Title: The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool | Author: PJ LaRue | Illustrator: Aristides Rodriguez | Publication Date: June 28, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 63 | Recommended Ages: 5 to 10

Book Description: Join Exciting Princess Adventures and Learn Life Lessons Along the Way

Have you ever wanted to ride a dolphin or dreamed of playing on a rainbow as if it were a waterslide? How would you feel if someone tried to kidnap you, and you were forced to move to Hawai'i to hide and live with people you don't know? That happened to Harmonie. Come meet Harmonie, her new Mystic Princess friends, and find out what happens when her enemies, the Children of Ares, find her again.

My Review

I had a wonderful time reading to Amanda our latest adventure story, The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool. The story has everything a little girl enjoys. There are princesses with special powers who do neat things like ride dolphins and slide down rainbows. They have adventures as they practice their powers and they have to stay alert as a gang of teenagers (the children of Ares) are on a mission to capture Princess Harmonie.

Even though the story is really girly, that doesn't mean it's airy-fairy. There are several life lessons that are being taught in a fun and colorful way. And, the story is simply written, so I didn't have to stop and explain what was going on after each chapter.

Also, the chapters are short, which I prefer, because if Amanda was tired or it was getting too late, I could still squeeze in one chapter at bedtime. It was nice to see that she didn't want to miss a night. In fact, she and I are both hoping that we will get to review the second book in the series!

The Buzz About The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool

"The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool has a delightful plot. P. J. LaRue uses mythological characters to tell a lively story of bravery and friendship. The book teaches important lessons on strengths and weaknesses, conservation and safety. This is the first book in the Mystic Princesses series, and I cannot wait for the next princesses' adventure to come. Young girls will love The Mystic Princesses adventure on their bedside table." ~ Kelly Santana, Readers' Favorite Book Reviews

"A lovely book for children with colourful pictures and any child who reads it will be looking for a sequel." ~ 5 Star Review, Diane, Amazon

"'The Mystic Princesses and the Whirlpool' is a confidence boosting book for children, giving them important information. It is the first in a series and I look forward to reading more about Harmonie and her friends." ~ 5 Star Review, Mary C., Goodreads

"This early chapter book is perfect for children ages six through ten. It does not portray wimpy princesses, but strong, respectful and independent female role models involved in many adventures in which they learn to overcome their weaknesses, act against bullying, and cooperate with friends and family to promote human welfare and peace. Short chapters interspersed with illustrations will maintain interest if the book is read aloud for younger children. Introduce your little princess to this one." ~ 5 Star Review, Barbara M., Amazon

"The short chapters would make this ideal for younger girls who are newer to reading Chapter Books. The colourful illustrations are excellent, and compliment this warm story nicely. A new series for girls, offering a fun way to learn valuable life lessons." ~ 5 Star Review, M.J. Kinsmen, Amazon

I had the pleasure of reading to Amanda (age 7) the children's book, Mike and the Dog-Gone Labradoodle, the first book in the brand new mystery series, The Pet Shop Society. She particularly enjoys mystery stories.

Story-time at bedtime is one of my favorite moments of the day. I love reading to Amanda, especially if the story engages her mind like this one did. It's not scary and I think it's easy for kids to follow along. I recommend it for boys and girls ages 7 to 11.

This is not the first time that one of Emlyn Chand's stories has appeared on Amanda's Books and More. Amanda and I did a review of one of her picture books this past July about a talented young bird (a cockatiel) named Sammy.

About the Author:
Emlyn Chand

Emlyn (4)

From an early age, Emlyn Chand has counted books among her best friends. She loves to hear and tell stories and emerged from the womb with a fountain pen grasped firmly in her left hand (true story). Her affinity for the written word extends to absolutely every area of her life: she has published fiction across multiple genres, overseas and contributes as both an editor and an author to the Novel Publicity Guides for Writing & Marketing Fiction series, and loves the written word so much, she even married author Falcon Storm! Don’t forget that she is the founder and president of Novel Publicity too.

The book that changed Emlyn’s life is Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson. It opened her eyes to the world that could exist if only she was willing to create it—a lesson she has never forgotten. Maybe that’s why she loves writing her Bird Brain Book series for children so much!

Emlyn’s first novel, Farsighted, won the prestigious Writer’s Digest Self-Published Novel of the Year award in 2012 for the YA category. She now writes most of her fiction under her real name, Melissa Storm.

My Review

Elsa Takaoka
Elsa Takaoka, Author

I am in a foreign country learning a new language and I am a stay-at-home mommy raising two beautiful little girls. This has also given me the time and opportunity to begin my own bucket-list. On my list is writing and publishing a series of children’s books.

I have always had a love of writing, and reading to my own children has helped me rediscover my love of children’s literature. I dived head first into the vast and scary world of self-publishing and quickly discovered it is an adventure in itself.

I blog as creative outlet, and as an escape from the difficulties of learning a new language and lifestyle. I try to share what I have learned through the process of writing a picture book. I also introduce Japanese children’s literature translated into English, not otherwise easily accessible.

I am determined to continue, regardless of how many mistakes I may make. The best advice I have received has come from an unlikely source, the husband, who has told me “It is not about being wildly successful on your first attempt, it is about, persevering even through disappointments.”

Writing for children is a noble art. One that I love and support. I invite you to take a look around, and rediscover the love of children's literature.

My skills in the Animation field lie mostly in storyboarding and concept, although I also enjoy animating. I often take up freelance work for sequential art, and digital painting.

In my spare time I like to make dolls, jewelry, and paint with watercolor, or acrylics. I love to watch cartoons, films, and go hiking, or swimming when I'm away from my tablet. But I'm never without a sketchbook, and the sense to capture the world around me.

The Dilly Dally Bedtime Routine

Title: Gerbs in the House: The Dilly Dally Bedtime Routine
ISBN: 978-0-9917402-7-7
Author: Lydia Lukidis
Illustrator: Heather Cook Photographer: Bailey J Thompson
Publication Date: September 15, 2014
Publisher: Gerbil Meets Mouse Publishing
Age Range: 3-7

About The Book

Mocha says it’s bedtime, but Petri wants nothing to do with it! Reading books, singing lullabies and juggling plates are only a few of the things Mocha does in an attempt to tire his son out. Although Petri is entertained, he still refuses to sleep. He just wants to dilly dally! Worn out by his son’s shenanigans and silly antics, will Mocha ever get Petri to bed before losing his marbles?

My Review:

Amanda and I really enjoyed The Dilly Dally Bedtime Routine. The images were captivating and the rhyming/lyrical words were funny. We loved the photographed images of the gerbils in the dollhouse. The small furniture, tiny phone and skateboard were really neat. The drawings that were included were also fun to look at. And, the outtakes at the end of the book were a nice addition. In fact, it was one of Amanda's favorite parts in the book.

This book will make a great birthday or Christmas present.

Here's a short excerpt - Mocha is speaking to his active son, Petri:
For the love of lollipops And sweet, chewy gumdrops, Just go to sleep. For if you don't, You'll make me weep!
I highly recommend this story for children ages 3 - 7.
